Monitors between $400-$500 a pair

So I'm coming in to a few extra bucks and was wondering what suggestions you guys have for cheap monitors.

I was thinking about getting monitors that are biamped but I could use my 2 altec lansing monoblocks to power some instead.

If your in the U.S. I'd look into probably the Event TR8 or the KRK V4 Series II (price just dropped to 400$)... The V4s small so its not going to have the lowend others have, though has surprising bass for this size. Its midrange and highend detail far exceed most monitors in this price class. I'm sure someone will come along against small monitors, since they don't have lowend others have, but you can get good mixes out of many 4 and 5" speakers, and many people do. If your in an untreated room it doesn't really matter too much any way most untreated rooms have gigantic problems below 80hz... If your room is untreated... I might consider something like the Wharfedale Diamond 8.2a's
and spend 160$ on room treatment.

we are treating the room now with super chunks in the corners and about 10 4" rock wool panels.

Thanks for the help. Are the Events amplified? I'll look into the kleins and the hummels

The event TR8 are active. IF you want to do the passive route your going to spend a chunk more. I like Passives with a good amp better. Rotel High Currents are quite suitable for a budget good studio poweramp. The RB-1050 is 400$... Event 20/20 is 300$. The Wharfedale Diamond 8.2 really shine on the passive route, there better than a lot of the stuff you'll fin. I've heard the actives are really comprimised by internal amps...

You won't be sorry.
