Thread Starter | 002R analog input question
Hey this may sound like a stupid question but I have just brought a set of nice new preamps and I am pluging them into analog inouts 5 - 8. I first set the gain on the preamp to a good level but its showing up in pro tools as being way to hot. I would like to keep the preamp level high so is there a way to turn down the incomming signal into pro tools?? I am using version 7.3 thanks |

does your pre have a pad on it? are the analog ins set to +4 and not -10? why do you want the pre-amp level high? if the signal doesn't need lots of gain, then it shouldn't matter if the level on your pre is low. i guess i just don't understand what the problem is. if you're monitoring your levels in PT, and they're way too high, then your pre is turned up too hot, and isn't "at a good level". if you're looking for a certain sound characteristic that happens when the pre is run hot, then you could pad the input or output before it gets to PT. -ryan p.s. don't take this as trying to make you feel stupid in anyway.... totally not my intention. i'm just trying to understand what you're after.

Hey thanks my levels on the back were set to +4 DB. I was told that the more you drive this preamp the better it will sound.

they should be set to +4. if you want to run the pre-amp hotter, pad the input. if your pre-amp doesn't have built-in pads, you can get an inline attenuator that goes between the mic cable and the pre-amp's input. what pre-amp is it by the way? i'm just curious why you were told that it sounds better when run hotter. i'd be concerned about issues with the noise floor, setting your inputs to -10. -ryan |

Yeah don't sweat not cranking the pres. Some people like to push API's pretty hard but they use pads. Others push pres that have input and output controls so they can get all the "character" but not all the volume.
