002R or M-Audio Octane: Which converters? I am doing a session soon where I will be getting ahold of some nice pres to get some great channels on this project I will be working on. I am getting 4 api channels and 2 channels of avalon. Needless to say, I am very excited. I have two options on how I can run these new toys into ProTools. 1) Use the inputs on the back of the 002R -or- 2) Plug in my m-audio octane pre via lightpipe and use its converters. I am recording at 48k, so both are options. I know of the issues when using Lines 1-4 on the 002 due to the pres. I am getting my 002 modded by BLA soon, but I can't wait for this session, so i need to choose. I am leaning towards using the m-audio a/d line ins but I am open to suggestions. I know neither are fantastic by any means, but ,which do you think has better a/d converters: A stock 002R or the ones on the m-audio octane? Thanks in advance.

I would do a test recording of each using all your outboard pres although the 002's pres would be considered neutral sounding by most people IMO. Exactly what you want when using outboard pres so that their character comes through on recordings I reckon?

Do realize that it's possible you'd be running those pre's thru the pre's on the octane. I'm not sure it has the option to bypass the pre's.

http://www.guygraphics.com/uploads/p...3/octane-d.jpg You can see the bottom row 1/4" is dedicated line-ins that bypass the pre and use the converters only. trancedental- yeah, I pretty much just want the most accurate representation of the api/avalon pre as possible. I don't even know if my ears will be able to tell a difference. The biggest advantage I see with the octane is I won't have to use the 1-4 inputs on the 002R, which as most know are a little shaky at bypassing the pre.

The M-Audio Octane has line-in to the A/D. I would definitely use the Octane. In my experience it is quite a bit cleaner than a stock 002.
