My DIY Acoustics Project...pics

I actually started this thread on Ethan Winer's forum and don't feel like posting everything twice. I am updating the thread every time I make progress. I'm installing bass traps and broadband absorbers. So, incase anyone is interested in checking it out here's the link.

Awesome, thanks for posting... I'm going to be starting this adventure in a month or so, so I'm really digging seeing the as-you-go stuff.

You mentioned a frameless design on the other forum... I've heard people talk about this, but I haven't seen any usage plans, like how would you hang a frameless panel? Well, besides just screwing through it and having a washer so it doesn't pull through? I'd like to ditch the wood frames on most of them if I can, but still not have the screws on the outside face.

I've tried to look around, but I haven't come up with much for that, I'm sure I'm just missing a certain search term...

Thanks again, peace.

Check out this thread. I posted a reply to this guy with a picture sequence on building and hanging the frameless panels. I decided against this method because I wanted my panels to look tight and sharp. Especially after I got the minwool in the mail I noticed how difficult it would be to get a professional look with this method. The panels are not rigid, they are very fragile and can break in half very easily. Hope this helps.

Cool, thanks for the heads up... The frameless idea was nice, but if there's gonna be structural issues... I'll build frames.

I was just trying to cut down on cost a bit, but it's not the end of the world, my pop's big into woodworking, is retired, and looking for projects.

Wow, not only do you get good sound they look trippy with the black lights too! I'm definitely gonna cover my traps in white fabric now

Must say you've done a great job! I've got the same monitors as you, are you using a BM sub with them? I also make psytrance so bass is a real issue, did you feel the bass traps have really helped sort out the low end in your room?

More than I imagined. No more humming basslines. Now I can hear the tones and feel the 16th note pulses in the bass. I'll be able to make easier mixing and eqing decisions now. I cannot recommend this enough.

i really enjoy the pictures though. thanks for posting them.

You're welcome, I'm happy to share. the change to wood frames was last minute. I suddenly realized as construction time got closer that mounting and handling these traps would be much better with wood frames. the fake wood paneling in my room, while retro as hell , is weak and required a completely custom mounting system that worked with the studs behind the paneling. also, i wanted these traps to have clean edges and corners. after all I'm going to be working under them everyday, they should have an aesthetic appeal as well.

I missed this question earlier.

Samson 120A. Shhhhhh. dont tell anybody though...

It's not all that bad i suppose. it's loud and it bumps and that's all I care till i can afford a Dyn sub. Sound design/mixing with a sub is pretty useless without having bass traps anyway. The low frequencies just ring out and multiply giving a false representation of what is really coming from the speakers.
