perfect cheap room mics?

Has anyone used the AT4033 series for room mics? Do you have any other suggestions in the same price range or cheaper?

I'm used to something like 414's, but I can't afford those at the moment :-)

The 2020 does a better job on most vocals for me, surprisingly, but the 4033 is so much more versatile...a lot more suitable for a room mic... are you talking about just mixing in some ambience to liven up a song?

That's funny you say that! I had a 4033 a LONG time ago [it got stolen a while ago as well]. Anyways, I have a 4050 now. My first thought when I used the 4050 was 'Wow, I remember the 4033 sounding better than this.'

If it's a good sounding room, try the Cascade Fatheads(ribbons). They're very good and very cheap

Is $80 cheap?

My new favorite room mic for drums (previously used U87's, Gefell M71S's, UM70's, MXL V69's, etc.) is the Apex205 ribbon modified by Michael Joly at Oktavamod. Absolutely killer. In mono no less. Takes the trash out of room mics and replaces it with beef. thumbsup

The mic itself is around $80, the mods are around $250. Still cheap in my book.

War,
What was the name of that mic you and I used on Saturday? The one that ended up used for my vocal? Seems that might be perfect as a room mic also. Come to think of it, bet is good for EVERYTHING.

The Avenson STO-2.

And yeah, the STO-2 worked well on EVERYTHING we needed. I was just telling a local engineer friend about our sessions, and explained that beyond drums and guitar cabs, every single overdub on your songs from vocals to percussion to organ / piano sounds was done with a single Avenson mic.

I can't wait to get mixing this week. Hope you guys had a good gig and good trip home.

Perfect and cheap?

Pretty tall order, but I'd say just about any cheap pair of omni reference type condensers. Behringer ECM-8000, Nady, etc. Not perfect, but about as close as you'll get for cheap.

For something a little different, an Electrovoice EV-635.

KEL HM-1s are the best inexpensive room mics I know of. They also work great as overheads, with a great, big tom sound and really clean (not brittle) cymbals.

I second the Avenson 'stapes' mics -- I have an early pair (the kind where the 'guts' of the mic are in an electrical box) and have yet to hear a bad live/room recording. They are $500/pair which is a steal in my opinion. If anything happened to mine I'd be calling Brad within minutes.
