KRK RP5 vs RP6

There seem to be a billion Monitor threads right now, so I figured one more wouldn't hurt.
:)

A lot of good things have been written about the RP-5's, so I went to guitar center and they definitely sounded good for the money. I then enquired with the US dealer about their Dual Voltage Capabilities (I am buying these for someone overseas) and he highly recommended getting the RP6's over the 5's (citing some build quality issues).
Can't seem to find the RP6's anywhere to check out, so can anyone tell me if they are as good as the RP5's?

Am looking for a monitor in the 300-400 range so if you have any other suggestions by all means speak up (MUST have switchable voltage though).

thanks for your help...Low end rocks.

:)

first off.. searched for them on here?

secondly,.. apperently the low end isn't really "there" on the 5s i'd imagine, since they're such small drivers.
I use HS80ms, so i don't really need a sub (yet) - but that could be something to think about if you get the 5's for your friend.

I mix on RP5's and you definately need a sub! You can't hear anything below 56hz (they're rated 53hz). They do sound good for the money although I much prefer the V6's anyday!

Yup. I don't know if there is something up with the search engine on gearslutz, but I've tried a bunch of times with different queries and nothing comes up.

Anyone else had a chance to hear the RP6's vs the RP5's?

same? better? worse?

thanks again!

I used to own a pair of KRK Rokit 6's & had listened to my friends Rokit 5's. Its true that the 5's don't really have a lot of low end..

However i wasn't really happy with the Rokit 6's, they're a little 'hi-fi' & i found my mixes really didn't translate that well. I would suggest maybe checking out the Samson Rubicon 6A instead, almost the same price but a lot better..

the RP6's are (right now) a "limited edition" that didn't go over as well as our buyers would have hoped. To my ears, the lack of low end ont he RP5's is not that big a problem. The real problem for me is the exaggerated low end that is there, and the mid range scoop they have. To me they sound like fantastic home stereo speakers--everything sounds good, nothing sounds very revealing.

Yamaha's new HS50's are a much better idea in the 5 inch range. And they're within your budget. A sub is definitely needed, however.

Always good advice to be found here!

thanks.

Will definitely check out the Yamaha's. I have also read all the good things about the Tascam VL-X5's too. Esp as I don't think I can afford the sub right now, they might be perfect. The tricky part is getting something that has an easy way to switch the Voltage, so I'll have to look into that. MY sister lives in New Zealand and man gear there is soooo expensive. It seems to be about $200-300 cheaper for me to buy stuff here in the US for her and then Mail it.

anyways....thanks for all the help!

Got the RP5 the first day it was available and I like the sound very much. Gives tight and clear sound with lots of details. Though I know there isnt a real bottom end on them, my room emphases it so I still hear it (bad sounding bedroom...)

I suggest using a subwoofer with them.

I compared the RP5 to a lot of monitors and also to their bigger brothers. The RP6 doesnt sound so detailed anymore and I have the idea a little enhanced mid section. The RP5 and 8 are the ones to get I think, RP6 just floats in the middle with not much addition.

V series are better of course (well the 6 and 8 are, the 4 sounds harsh and really does miss a lot of bass)

I would suggest going with your Tascam VL-X5 thought.

Hey thanks for that. THat is what I was curious about. When I compared all the speakers at GC It is amazing how often more expensive speakers just don't sound as detailed. And I do enjoy mids.
:)
I wish I could check the RP6's out myself, but alas it is tricky sometimes.

And Warren I read all about the Tascams on your forum as well, so I am super excited to hear those. The only thing is the power issue. the KRK's have a switchable Voltage. I don't think the Tascams do (unless you know otherwise?), so It might just be simplest to go with the RP5's for now.

I am hoping to upgrade my old Alesis Mk2's soon so I will definitely try those Tascams.

thanks for the help people.
