DIY - Bass traps

Hi,

I had planned on buying some Bass traps but unfortunately it is really expensive to have them shipped to switzerland so i have to go the D.I.Y route.

I wanted to buy some 705 panels from readyacoustics but again shipping is over $300 for a set of 6 which is out of my range for now.

So i started looking for a place in switzerland where i could just buy some rockwool or fiberglass panels and found this product on the isover website:

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/1394/untitledmo4.jpg

I'm wondering if this will do the job or not? I'm thinking of ordering 2' inch panels (48' by 24')

If these will work then i'll try and cover them up with fabric temporarily. Otherwise if anyone knows where i can get OC 703/705 in switzerland or anything equivalent then please let me know..

Would appreciate some help with this!

Thanks!

Those look okay, but see if they offer acoustic data to be sure. The 2 inch thickness is fine for general absorption, but stack two of them adjacent for corner bass traps to be four inches thick.

Thanks for the reply Ethan! That's what i was thinking of doing, using 2' panels for the reflection points & putting together two panels for the corners.

This is all the information available on the site, i'm going to call them to find out more details. What kind of acoustic data should i be looking for? The density is already mentioned its 50KG/m3. What other information should i ask for?

Appreciate the help!

HI there!

I have built my own panels out of that matter.
Those Isover Panels (60cm thick) are very good in isolating and absortion. I used them also to build the ceiling of my control room, that became very close to perfect and linear! I bought some drape and covered the ceiling with it in Light blue. It not only works well, it also looks great. Use your Imagination, Materials like the Isover mineral wool, some textile to cover it up, some glue, maybe an analyser, and most of all...your precious ears.

Greetings from Portugal.
I'll be (in a month or so) available at www.loudstudio.com

@ Crashdown

Just out of curiosity, how many panels did you put & how much did it cost you in total?

50kg is a bit light but will work fine for general absorbtion and reflection control. With that density, I'd go 6" thick (triple layer) for bass control.

After some more research i managed to find some acoustic data on the panels i wanted to order. The 2 inch panels seems to be equivalent to the 703 panels. Sorry its in german!

I just went down the DIY route myself here in Australia with similar panels as your looking at, worked a treat. I ended up stacking 2 together for a thicker panel. I'd recommend gettin the Ready Bags, made life so much easier then covering the rock wool myself and made a neater job!!

Good luck

Looking at the coefficient numbers, that must be for a faced panel (similar to FRK/FSK) - hence the reduced mid/high frequency numbers and the hump down at 250ish.

You'd need to remove this facing to use for reflection control.

The one's i'm ordering don't have any facing on them though. Do the rest of the numbers look alright to you?

The cost works out to about $10 a panel which seems pretty decent i guess..

I just hope they don't weigh too much, i plan on shipping them from switzerland to pakistan eventually as i'm moving there after two months..

Thinking of getting 24 panels for the moment & if the weight is not as much as i fear then even double that..

They'll likely be OK. Just understand that for bass control you'll want a minimum of 100mm - 150 would be better.
