Soundcraft Series 1

What does everyone think of this mix, using to mix down. As apposed to any new mixer under the $1000 mark. Im getting this puppy for $200 CAD.

Soundcraft has had a boatload of mixers over the years so you might want to post a picture or at least a description to help with indentification.
I had one of the first Soundcraft boards imported into the US which was called a "flat pack 12x4". This was about 1974. At the time they also had a 16x2 that was built into a flight case. Both were OK but seriously lacked headroom. The next board I owned was a Series II, then a 1624. Since then they have issued another series II and inumerable others.

I believe that this is soundcrafts first mixer, its a 16x2, no mic pre's, unfortunately there is so little information on them, even soundcraft only has info on the series 1S and no the 1. 1974 sounds about right though, as well as the who flight case bit.

I don't remember a Soundcraft without mic pre's (not to say that one didn't exist) and the only market at the time that used a board w/o pre's would have been broadcast or post.
Remember that in '74 outboard pre's weren't the norm and all boards for SR/recording had pre's as a necessity.
I've still got some old Studio Sound (english magazine) that have Soundcraft ads and maybe I can find some info.
The "no mic pre" thing really stumps me, though.

i was mistaking, it does have pres, just no phantom . The series one is only mentioned on soundcrafts website in a little blurb Soundcraft - Professional Audio Equipment as there first mix. As far as i know its all descrite (no ics) and sounds pretty good, but we will find out soon enough.

Took a look and that's the series 1 that I remember. I used it and its brother the 12x4 for several years when I first started my studio. Got some good recordings off of them but they are very basic and my 12x4 was definitely "headroom challenged", especially during mix. Fun boards though.
Oh yeah, no IC's, actually very minimal circuitry. All circuit cards are attached to the top plate and (at least on mine) the buss bars were solid rods that ran across and through all the channel cards. When you had to replace a pot you had to literally cut the card away from the buss rods to remove it.

I received my Series 1 yesterday!
It had been in storage for years in a hall I visited a few months ago.
Bought it for the ridiculous amount of... 50$!

It has 16 ins, 2 aux and 2 outs.
So far I'm just putting it in its paces but the idea is to use it as a summing box for my Pro Tools rig. Automation plus dynamics ITB and summing OTB...
It has not direct outs so its a no-go for tracking more then 2 inputs.
Mine was modified and 4 channels have 48V. 1974 was the year and this desk was used by Lee Perry at Black Ark on numerous reggae hits in the '76-'78 period...

I know this may seem like an odd question, but would you be able to post rough dimensions of the series 1, I haven't picked mine up yet, but i need to make room now, as its my only day off for a while.

I'm sorry about bumping this topic. But uuhm, I've got this desk and does anyone know how many Ohms the mic pre's are? It's really hard to find some good info about this desk. Thanx.

IIRC they are transformer coupled pres that probably present somewhere between 1200 and 2000 ohms to the mics. Pretty normal stuff. I used all the standard dynamics and condensers of the day with them without problems. Specs are purely a guess on my part.
