$10 DIY Wall Mounts for your Owens-Corning 703 Acoustic Panels

Well, Mr DIY is at it again.

I designed and built some OC-703 acoustic panel wall mounts for less than $10 each using (oak-faced) 1/2 inch plywood, a 2"X4", some screws, 2 hanging brackets, 4 felt adhesive pads and 4 angle braces.
It brings the (self-covered) 2" OC-703 Acoustic Panel 4-1/2 inches away from the wall with a bare minimum of the panel being blocked, front or back.

It's not Rocket Science but it seems to work.

Here is the link to my step by step photos:

Wow, thanks! I need something like this, too, so your thread comes at a good time.

Never having dealt with this stuff before, I was wondering how much each panel weighs (just the fiberglass, not the whole thing assembled), and what you covered yours with. Also, in the first pic, that's the plywood - right? - with the fiberglass on the opposite side held on with the screws?

Wow!!!

That seems like a really innovative, cheap and simple idea for mounting!!! Thanks for sharing.

So am I right in thinking that the actual panel is just wrapped in the fabric? Or does it have a frame as well?

Thanks again.

I bought 6 panels of 2" OC-703. The shipping weight was 26 pounds.
So maybe 3 pounds each panel?
Yes that is plywood.
The OC703 panels are not held on with screws but held into place with angle braces that are screwed into the "HSG Wall-Mount"

The actual Owens-Corning 703 Panel is wrapped in fabric only with no frame.
This specific wall-mount design without a formal frame around the panel reduces very little of the OC703 panel mass which is what I have read to be a good thing, plus getting the panel away from the wall is also a positive.
FYI-I bought my OC-703 panels at Acoustic Panels by ATS Acoustics

This is a really cool design.

Well done, and thanks for your quick reply's to questions. This design would obviously work with 4" thick panels as well right? Though you'd need larger brackets.

Also, did you glue the fabric to the panels? Or pin it?

Thanks again for you help.

Cheers.

I can't remember the type of fabric (welcome to over age 50 ) but I could blow air through it very easily and it was on-sale for about $4-$5 a yard X 58 inches (Low-End Theory!!! )

I think you could easily do 4" thick panels with larger brackets.
I used the 3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive to glue the fabric to the panels.
It worked well for me.
Cutting the fabric to fit the corners takes time. I got worse each time.
FYI, ATS Acoustics liked the idea well enough to post some of my photos and

I just have to add one step for these black panels :-)

Step 1. Paint the metal angles black before attaching.

That'll finish it off veddy naaahce :-)

Thanks, Bounce!
Once the weather gets nicer I plan to spray paint the entire thing including the brackets.
A very good point though!

Why not install the brackets behind so you don't see them at all?

Thanks, Sounddawg.
Well, the brackets, in this case, hold the front of the acoustic panel against the pieces of 2X4 that support the back of the panel. There are no screws going into or through the acoustic panel. It's just being held in place by the brackets.

Thanks very much homestudioguy for great "low end theory" solution. I just bought a new home and have very little to invest in my project room. After drafting several ideas, I'm definitely going to be using your idea or a variation of the theme. :)

You are very welcome ultrasource!
Please also check out my $80 workstation/desk design (BUILD THIS $80 WORKSTATION) on my website too!
It might provide you with some design concepts of your own!

I'll probably do the panels in a darker pastel green and then perhaps do black on the brackets.

I guess you could but the way ours are built you really don't need to. You can just hang ours like a picture and place a piece of wood or PVC pipe between the panel and the wall. The weight of the panel will keep the spacer (wood or PVC) in place. But like I said your idea would work pretty darn well also.

Glenn

PS I had one customer use a PBR can as a spacer. Talking about your recycling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wow, you got it right in a very simple and effective way. i will definately consider this soon. my other plan for a quick and cheap solution would follow DIY Tube Traps - but i read that this design is kinda ineffective on broad absorption, so maybe i will combine

I went even cheaper than that. Used the cardboard that the 703 shipped in to frame the sides, wrapped it in burlap, and hung it with the angle brackets only, secured with command adhesive strips (no wall damage for renters). Cost me about $1.75 per panel not counting the cloth. If you want it away from the wall more, just get a longer bracket.
