Unhappy Using B&W DM303 as a nearfield monitor?

I came across a pair of B&W DM303 bookshelf speakers and was wondering if they would be ok to use as nearfields. Right now I am using the Alesis Monitor One's MKII and was looking for something different.

good speakers. I'd use them. Aren't they passive though?
If so, make sure you use a good amp.
