DBX266xl

Anybody used the DBX 266xl on vocals? How'd it work out for you?

not terribly nice. you can shave off a few db, but you have to be really carefull, because if you overdo it, you'll mess up your sound.
I wish there was some mod for this machine. Can't we pop in some other opamp?

How do you mean?

It's a shame because I'm using it on ultra short notice, and the rest of the signal path will be pristine--->

AEA r84 ---> API 312 ---> DBX comp

what I mean is that doing too much shows up pretty soon. It's not a bad machine, but it takes an awful long time to dail in a sweetspot. You'll know it's there it just takes some time. I'd rather track without any compressor unless as a desired effect, but that is just me. I could be useful to give a little compression in a mix without really hearing it. that is what happened to mine, before I sold it.
Could be that it will work for you, take care of your monitoring when recording IMHO.
Cheers

they are decent for live work but they arnt a studio box. with the chain you are using the 266 will just mess it up. record at 24bit and drop the gain, use a plug-in in the mix you will be much better off.

Dont bother with the 266, get a 160 instead. You can get it for about the same price (not taking into account that its only one channel).

I have one. It lives in my guitar rack, which is the only place that I've found it to be useful. Not subtle. Difficult to dial in. For low cost compression, a RNC or a 160(x, xt, a) would be better. The RNC would be better for vocals IMHO. An Aphex Compellor would work too.
