record voice with sm57?

hello,

I have test some differents mics for voice (with fusion/ metal band): neumann TLM 103 and Studio project T3....
(I choose T3 more transparent than TLM 103, and no "sshh" )

but..I thing the song was too smooth...that's why I choose to record in another tracks same voice with Sm57 (with filter "anti-pop" (french word...))...and no the voice are more hard...more live...

my gears for this test:
sm57/studio project T3/TLM 103 ---API 512C---1176Ln UA--- apogee rosetta--- Digital performer---dynaudio Bm6A

have you tried?
sm57 is really the best mic on the world ?

thx

scuse me for my english

I know some people use it for vocals, I would deff not write it off. Use what works for you!

Pilepoile the SM57 is an underated vocalmic! It is nice if you have a good micpre which gives you a good gain.

You can sell the TLM 103 and get a Shure SM-7b...

I think you would be more happy with that option.

I will try the sm7cl in 2 week!

for this, i have try to put the db attenuator (-15dB) in the input of my preamp (api 512c ) and go with gain in the yellow metter....

very very great saturation with sm57!!!!!!

You got to love the 57. If it's good enough for Daniel Lanois it's good enough for me. Use what works.

I've made some amazing jazz combo recordings with just one mic in a live room, picking up drums, sax, keys, bass guitar. The band has to be good enough to play with good levels and dynamics and listen to each other, but it's amazing what a 57 can do. That being said, I absolutely hate it as a vocal mic, but maybe I just haven't heard it on the right voice yet. I certainly don't give it much of a chance on vocals, and considering it's the same element as an sm58 it ought to be a decent vocal mic, it's just too damned midrangey for me.

That's great that it works for you though! Congrats, nice to see someone experiment a bit and win!

Cheers,
Don
