bass trap/storage design

hello,

Im gonna make some broadband bass traps but just wondering what to use - rockwoll or rigid fiberglass.

Im just wondering if one is better than the other (Ethan Winer claims that a 4" thick piece of rigid fiberglass in a corner can be "quite effective to frequencies below 125Hz)

Anyone know if the method of using rockwool cut into triangles and placed in a corner is more effient?

So what im thinking is that if the rigid fiberglass is good enough then i could make some kind of shelving behind this to store books, cables, old cups of tea , bills etc....

...or have some of the space filled with rockwoll....?

any opinions?

cheers

steve

The differences in absorption coefficients of mineral wool vs. rigid fiberglass at similar thicknesses & densities are negligible, so get the on that is cheaper in your area.

I agree with scrubs on this. Either will work fine. Now working with each may be different. With the mineral wool you may find you will need to build a frame around it instead of just covering with fabric. The mineral wool is not as rigid.

I find mineral wool more itchy than fiberglass. But in my area, mineral wool is about 1/4 of the cost of OC fiberglass!!!

It is worth noting that when building with rigid fiberglass or mineral wool it is best to wear long pants, long sleeve shirt, gloves, hat, mask and glasses, oh and SHOES.
Not that the stuff will kill you but you might wish you where dead, from itching so much!!
Take a shower after.

As and aside, I know that both rockwool and rigid fibreglass are considered 'safe', but you've still got to wonder about it when it is such an irritant to your skin.

thanks for the replies!

If i go with the rigid stuff can anyone see any problem (acoustically speaking) with making some kind of shelving behind this?

storage is a BIG problem for me.

cheers

You want as much of a open space behind the panel as you can, so putting shelving behind it would not be a good idea.

But not a hot shower.
Hot shower will open your pores more, working the fibres deeper into your skin.
Covering any bare skin with baby powder before you start will help with resisting the fibres and make other people laugh at you- especially if you put it on your face. :-)

I was going to throw in the cold shower part, but figured I would get to many smart a$$ remarks from it.
