Terrible mix translation...beginner monitors?

I have been mixing on a decent Logitech 2.1 system. I know, I know that is not real practical, so I have decided to get a decent set of entry level studio monitors. I am only on a $300 dollar budget so my choices are very limited. Also, I do not have any local music shops so I cannot go demo speakers so I am really relying on online reviews and forums. After quite a bit of research I have narrowed it down to a few sets that fit the budget on musicians friend....

M-Audio BX5a 70 Watt Active Studio Monitors $300
Alesis Monitor 1 Active MKII Powered Monitors $300
Fostex PM-1 MKII Active Nearfield Studio Monitors $300
TASCAM VL-X5 Bi-Amped Studio Monitors $300
Event Tuned Reference TR5 Active Monitors $300

I know that anyone of these is probably significantly better than my current setup, but hopefully a you guys can steer me in the right direction to get the most bang for the buck.

I am mostly mixing rap music so I understand that in the future I would probably have to get a sub to accommodate these speakers to give me an idea what is happening in the low end. You can check out some of our tracks at

My main concern for new monitors is the problem I have translating my mixes to other systems. Thanks for your time.

Get Wharfedale 8.2a's, they are much more detailed than those listed, will transfer better, and fall in your price range...

Any of those are alright (I like the idea of the Alesis best).

But, what is your room like - that is probably way more important.

Cool

TASCAM VL-X5

M-Audio BX5a
Alesis Monitor 1 Active MKII
Fostex PM-1 MKII
Event Tuned Reference TR5

And I am serious!

Tascam VL-X5 beat the snot out of all of the other monitors in that list. I've heard them myself and wouldn't bother with any of those other monitors. I've heard all of those monitors in person and none of them sound nearly as good as the VL-X5s.

Next step up IMHO would be Dynaudio, Genelec, ADAM, EMES, K&H et al.

It's amazing how often this question gets asked, but my answer is still the same.

Tascam VL-X5. It's still the only $300 pair of monitors I've heard that sound pretty much balanced and un-hyped.

Hey, I appreciate the input, the Tascam seem to be the sleeper where ever I go. But when I do find a review on it, it gets amazing praise. I searched around for them and they were all out of stock musicians friend, zsounds....but I did find them, and they are on there way!! I am glad I did my research or I would probably be ending up with some behringer truths haha. Thanks!!!

OH yeah, Warhead, your article was my main selling point but I didn't realize that front end audio was an online retailer, I thought it was just another forum. Sorry about that because I would have definitely scored them speakers from front end. Anyways, I had to add that in.

I would suggest you save an extra $100 and get the Yamaha HS50M... Those are great, accurate, and flat for the money, but they cost $400 for the pair so do a search on them and Check if you like them or not...
