Cascade FATHEAD

Has anyone heard or know someone who has heard what the Cascade fathead ribbon microphone sounds like. I am looking for a ribbon mic in this price range ($200.00) and am thinking about getting one of these. I pasted a link below if any one wants to check it out.

I'm also interested in this... I want to get some ribbon mics but don't want to break the bank! Is the Cascade good?! Red the tape Op review but haven't found too much info!

i just went through this myself, looked at lots of ribbon choices in that general price range. for the record, i have owned pairs of both coles 4038s and royer r-121s in the past few years. i wound up buying a shinybox 46mx ($250), and can heartily recommend it. it is brighter than either the coles or royers, while still giving a nicely warm top end that takes EQ easily. surely the best cheap mic i have ever purchased. a big plus for me was that jon ulrigg hand assembles each mic in his lab.

so that's without the Lundahl or Cinemag, right? do you regret sticking with the stock transformer, or does it sound good without?

mitty - checked them all out, and went with the stock tranny. some folks swear by the lindahl, and admittedly it is beefier, but in the end, i felt i was getting the sound i was looking for from the stock version. the acoustic differences were minor at best - all sounded very nice. remember, my applications are generally woodwinds, horns and strings in classical material - someone trying to mic a guitar amp might prefer a different transformer. though again, i think the hand assembly is the key to ensuring you are getting a good solid ribbon mic from mass manufactured parts.

I just recieved my Fat Head in the mail, after hearing it used on some of my friends sessions.
Let me tell you that this mic is awesome. Not only does it sound great, but the quality of the mic and what it came in is much better than I expected. For 160 bucks including shipping (that only took a week) you can't beat it.
I had been researching cheap ribbons for awhile and I'm glad I finally made the decision to get the Fathead.

Are the differences between the Fathead and Fathead II purely cosmetic?

The website says -

"FAT HEAD II Upgrades: Polished nickel grill, neck and nut with a larger body, plus a heavy-duty premium shockmount. Sonically the same as the standard FAT HEAD."

The II does look cooler I suppose.

I'm getting a pair of these with next weeks' paycheck. I've been waiting for over a month now. I'm really looking forward to it. I've decided to go with the Fathead I's. I hope I wont regret not getting the II's. I just can't justify the extra $ for looks right now. My budget just wont allow it.

I got a pair of fatheads, mainly as drum overheads. i've gotta try them still on guitar, etc..

You can't go wrong with them. Go with the first ones, not the II's.

A friend of mine swapped out the tranny in the apex 205 with a lundahl and also pulled out the mesh. The difference between that and before as well as my stock shinybox 165 $ version is amazing.

The whole microphone cost him like 150 with the transformer and the whole bit. It is just an amazing deal. Maybe his was one off but I am going to do it too!

Fathead II sounds awesome on Tenor Sax. Very rich low end and mids. Could use a little more high end... but then again I was using a cheap mic pre and cables. Very good mic for the money.

I'll be using the Fathead (stock transformers) on drums, guitars, vox etc sometime this week and next.

I got a fat head I about a week ago, and not to be that guy who's all about looking flashy (cause I'm not, I promise) but the fact that it comes with a kick ass metal flight case, as well as a decent shock mount and a wooden box inside the flight case blew me away.

On a more sonic note, my FH is good for getting a real earthy 60's-esque acoustic guitar sound. Great if you like me and a huge fan of that intentionally lofi sound.
