Avant CV12 Mic

Heard some pretty good reports on these mics - wondering if anyone here had any first hand experience with this mic or any other of the Avant range? Worth the $?

When you've said "a review on the Studio Auditions site we all know about"... you've said it all!

I ended up buying one of these, along with two of the little condensers that Avant makes.

Sounds great to me, has worked on everything I point it at. You can hear it in action here....

Hmm. It sounds really good on that vocal. Good top end, not too harsh (well I'm listening from my laptop speakers, so I dunno). Either way, I like what I hear. Wish I could get a pair.

Yeah the vox, and (from memory) the little CK1's (I think that's what they're called) are on the acoustic. The banjo is the CV12 too I think, everything else was in one little room.

And it was used on the Vox for this tune as well, which is abit more pop rock than the other one.

Do any of you have male vocal clips with these mics? I've been wanting to upgrade my TB1 but don't know if I want to go with a ribbon or try one of these.

Thanks

There are some clips on various sources at the above site which shall not be named. You might google Jam Room Sessions.

I picked up a CV-12 last night. It *really* has a great presence to it. There is an excellent crispness without any crunchiness. Now that I've written that, I see that this post could also be used as a Taco Bell commercial.

I also had emailed the company yesterday about differences between the CK-7 and the CV-12, and they responded promptly and were very sincere.

Wow - listening to the clips from johanze I'd say that the high end is way hyped. Harshly so to my ear. I imagine that it's some combination of the preamp and post processing, but her breathyness is kind of like a band saw on my eardrums...

i liked it. it sounded upfront and clear.

i went to the cv-12 site and it mentions that the buying the mic will include 3 different tubes which you can change for a different sound. it be cool to hear those differences.

Yeah... there's something going on there that's highlighting the the high end of her voice... I can hear it coming off the top of her throat.

Sounds pretty good otherwise, gott say.

We just did a lil' mini-shoot-out for male vocals at my place-- CV-12, Trion 8000, and Sputnik.

CV-12 was overall smoothest by a country mile. It just has that thing that it has-- vivid presence where the sibilance is totally natural--pure, perfect clarity.

The Trion, when we first powered it up, gave off a horendous, feedbacky buzzing... but then, turned it off and on again, it was fine. The high end is a little more accentuated. Is this good? Is it bad? Yes, and no, and no.

The Sputnik has aLOT more low end as a part of its sound. This would work to the benefit of screamery type guys who instinctively want to overload a mic and get that power-mad, denser-is-better sound.

Just wanted to share.

I didn't mean to conpare them. I was just glad to hear a positive example of my mic being used.

However, I see my next purchase and it starts with an A...

My Violet design Dolly sounds nicer then the Avant, it has a better overall construction too IMO.

I still don't get why you guys rave about a 80$ china mic which is sold for 500$ . Is it the color or the wooden box ?

i have to say i give thumbsupthumbsup up tried the mics at the Namm08 convention was impressed...yes a bit overdone on the hi end but an outbaord eq attenuating 10k or something similar would do the trick.... i try lots of mics royers another favorite and mojoave pretty good as well and neumann...was kinda disapointed...the new versions of their mics didnt cut it for me and didnt deserve the he price tag they demand...defintly older neuamanns ar far better....but avantone mics are really superb...keep up the work...after my conclusion i said to my self i need at least one or two of the cv-20's i belive they were...

+1 for the Avants. I have the CV-12 and the stereo mic (I forget the name and am too lazy to go look). Great sound, great service, excellent packaging and decent price.

I'm Joel's "co-shooter," and I gotta say, listening back to the tracks today that the Avant is the clear winner, followed pretty closely by the Sputnik. The Trion 8000 just doesn't hold up next to those 2. Sounded a bit like it was in a narrow box.

In the Sputnik's defense I'll add that it EQs up nicely, so when you shelf at like 10k plus it doesn't get harsh. But looking at the spectra for the two of them, the Avant naturally has a really nice extension above 12k without being brittle, harsh or overbearing.

The control for the test was my Rode NT2A, which just sounded sad next to everything else, nasal, boomy, notchy and dull. Bah!

I want to thank Joel for his time and gear. He has a great studio, and it was an awesome time!
