Thread Starter | Flat response cheap mics ?
Hi all I am currently in the market for some a pair of nice flat cheap microphones I am UK based and I am aware of the KEL HM-1 which looks ideal but is a little pricey once I have attracted the overseas add on price and also and import duty which could be another $100.00. So I am looking for a flat response mic it can be LDC or SDC, I would use them for overheads, vocals and possible some orchestral work so low self noise is a must too. I am having great difficulty finding the right mic for the job, ideas appreciated. If not it might have to be the KEL's Thanks |

CAD M179 - Not ruler flat, but much more neutral sounding than most inexpensive LDCs, plus it's multipattern, which is handy. Most versatile mic under $300, imo. Shure SM81 - Pretty damn flat response curve, if you believe the published specs. I love mine. |

The Oktava MK-011 is a new mid-size diaphram condensor that's pretty flat. I hear oktavamod.com is selling in europe now. Getting the modded one (he sells them new) would be the way to go.

| Naiant Studio - Home of the MSH Microphone! These will fit your description quite well. I have a pair of the msh-1 mics, and I use them all the time, they are flat. I am looking into some of his other mics too for when I don't want flat. |

| Very true, that is quite an unhyped mic that I happen to like the sound of. (cardioid only) The M179 suggestion is good also. (variable patterns) A pair of Avenson STO-2 are worth checking into. Very natural sound. (omni) War |
