| Recording a 4x12 Just recorded a 4x12 Marshall with a Orange Head. I used a Sm57 due to lack of quality mics and it occured to me, where should i place the mic? I opted for the centre of all four speakers but i wondered if anyone had any suggestions tips? sorry for, what is probably a reapeated, and certainly newbie question!! G |

| Pick one speaker that sounds the best. Then move the mic around the speaker until you get the best tone possible. |

| Lives for gear | Yea, go with one speaker instead of SM57 on all four. While you may initially think then, "Well why not just use a 1x12 instead?" it sounds really different and reacts differently with the amp with a smaller speaker (albiet not always in a bad way). You could go with center, but i'd try something about 1/3 of the way on the radius of the speaker. Just move it around until it sounds good really. Every cab will be a little different, and of course it's whatever sound you are looking for.

Either way, listen to each speaker and pick one. I put the 57 either dead on centre or on the outside of the cone, resting on the grill. I like putting PZM's on the opposite wall as well for an 'ambience without too much roominess' sound. A bit of a throwaway statement coming, but worth stating. Take what you have at hand and try to do something interesting with it- you might find an omni works well some days, or micing the guitarists right hand to get some pick attack (I do this a lot).

| Miking I usually place front of mike at edge of speaker angled about 45 degrees toward cone to get both edge and cone tones. I use an old U.S.A. 57 or Super Pro, (SM 58 with on/off switch). I have a few Mexican 57's and don't hear any difference with them. |
