Thread Starter | Less of a good thing...or more of a mediocre?
Here is my current big, life altering decision. I can either upgrade my drum mics in a way that would allow me to close mic all of the components of the drum kit but with mediocre, middle of the road mics. OR I can get say three decent mics (for example on small diaphram condenser, one large, and a ribbon) and use just those three strategically around the kit. What would you do? |

My thoughts are... this question is answered by the quality of sound in the room. If the room sucks or is lacking in some way... go for the close micing - but be selective with your mic choices. If this is mostly for your own kit, take a day out to rent the mics in your budget and do a shootout, pick the ones you like best. Hell, might as well rent the 'room mic option' also - that way you will really know. Soundawg |

IMHO I'd go for a stereo pair of decent LDC mics (not really sure what your budget is), and a good versatile dynamic. If you've got a small room, just place your LDC's lower on the kit, a bit more aimed at the toms. All in all, I'd say get fewer good mics, as opposed to a bunch of middle of the road ones. Think of it as a gear upgrade, and somewhat of an investment. You'de probably just end up selling those mediocre mics later anyways.
