I remember reading that Joe Chicarelli likes them for that application.

The K2 is excellent value for money. I havn't used it for overheads, but I have for almost everything else. I use a pair of NT1000's for o'heads - they're doing a pretty good job. The cymbals have a nice sizzle without being brittle.

I dare say the K2 would make a good O/H mic.

They can sound very good on drum overheads. They sound big and take eq nicely.

i've actually only heard bad things about the K2's. a lot of people say they are too bright, and on drum OH's that could get overdone pretty quick. try and test them out before buying.

I didn't really like my k2 that much until I switched the tube. That took the nasty brightness it had and completely made it sound amazing.

That is strange. I just typed "rode k2 review" into google and the first three links led me to rave reviews of this mic. I know for a fact that they are very well regarded microphones.

Some will argue, of course, as with ANY piece of gear, but to say you have heard NOTHING good about it is either an exaggeration, a lie, of a seriously uninformed opinion.

Don't mean to be harsh, but I don't think your statement is any less harsh, really.

The K2 (speaking from personal experience) is a little on the bright side, and the tube character is not the most evident as with other mics, but it is an excellent workhorse mic, that varies from good to excellent on just about any source I have tried it on (male and female vox, strings, percussion, drum room, OH, bass amp).

For the money it is an excellent choice, and MANY people will agree with that sentiment, but don't take my word for it. Try it if you can, your ears will let you know.

IMHO, just about every rode mic I heard I thought was too brite, with the exception of the original classic.....

of course....YMMV...

Ummm.. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've only heard bad things, I have only heard bad things, so thank you for your lecture on my statement. Harsh? that doesn't even apply here, my statement wasn't harsh it was my 2 cents, but thanks for letting me know what you think of my statement, I really care.

Apparently Vinnie Colaiuta and Simon Phillips both use pairs of K2's for their drum overhead microphones.

try the t-bone rb500s/nady rsm(same mic different badge) - they're much cheaper and sound great on drum overheads - there's been a lot of talk about them on this forum recently so do a search and see if they suit your needs. They really smooth out the cymbals in a pleasing way and give you a great resonant sound on toms that a lot of LDCs don't seem to manage. They also take eq better than any mic i've tried.

The K2 is a damn good mic,
But I don't think I would buy 2 specificly for overheads....for about the same price as 1 K2, you could get a pair of SM81's or AT 4041's.
The K2 does sound good very good as a room mic for drums.

I would have to agree that the K2s are great mics for the money but if you want a versitlle mic for overheads I would use a pair of AKG C414s.
