rnp + rnc or rnla

mainly for vocals. i know the rnla has a character, but i havent really been able to find much info on what exactly this character is. is it undersirable at times? i just have a home setup atm, and its going to be my main vocal chain. (im only 21..give me time :p) id hope to be able to use this for doing budget ads or something too. i cant seem to find anything better in this price range available in nz.

i just want a thick and wide vocal sound, with hopefully better harmonics. using a twintrak pro right now, and it sounds yuck. its conveient, but nothing else. i used to like its convenience, but now im beginning to want better sounding stuff, convenience isnt all that important. to have both would be ideal, but it would cost more money than i have.

i must mention its mainly for vocals in a hard rock/metal genre. id like to maintain as much clarity in the low end of the voice that i can, while still keeping it fairly defined in the top end. your help would be appreciated :)

thanks,
zorran

The RNC is more versatile and probably a better option as your first or only compressor. The RNLA can be thought of as adding a milky quality to the sound.

You should be able to get a more than useable sound with the TwinTrak. If you cannot, and you follow the same setup methods with the RNP/RNC combo, you results might be the same.
You should search for posts about proper gain-staging.

RNC.

No matter what you get your biggest aid will be experimentation.

Have fun,

What kind of mic are you using? That's where I would start. And yes, the RNC is cheap and versatile for your purposes. Use super nice mode on vocals. Maybe the Twin track just doesn't like your mic? I have some pres that don't sound good with certain mics and great with others. Work on a good vocal chain that will achieve a sound you like.

I would use the RNC in SuperNice mode for most vocals...the RNLA is good for vocals, but it's phat-ass and isn't going to work everywhere. The RNC is more neutral and is quite pleasant....you can get better but it's certainly going to cost more.
