Building my iso booth, what should I not forget

Hi,

I've done all the search, I know how I will build the booth.
I need you to help me not forget things while I'm building it like electric plugs (how many ?), fan, ...
I know a lot of these things are obvious but a check list before I start would be helpfull.
Apart from the construction/acoustical side of the booth, I'd like to know what you think makes a better booth.

The booth will be 2m x 4m, the main use will be for vocal, guitars, bass recording, I hope to be able to record drums also.
I'm doing audio post, so I'll put a video monitor in there also.

Your experience is welcome.

Thanks for your time.

look for lights that dont get to hot

dont use flamable materials

think about to build it modular, so you can decunstruct and use it somewhere else

dont build the door by yourself, unless you are realy a pro

You missed searching on one key point - the shape of the room.

A 2 to 1 ratio or other such even multiples should be avoided. See this page on my company's web site that will help you to find better dimensions:

This is a big one.

I've built a few of these in varying locations and would say that ventelation, circulation and natural light are main factors, as well as the obvious, decent sound poofing

Ethan, thanks for your input, the size of the room will be 2.5m long, 2m large and 2m high, what do you think about that.

Can you guys point me some good air circulation systems ?

Take care.

cheers from Belgium

Make sure the lights you do get are silent.

halogene lights use to get hot, thats what i was speaking about, depense on your airsystem. the best would be a LED based light.

That's not much better. Please see the article I linked above. It's not a lot to read, and when you're done you'll understand much better what you need to do.

Ethan is 100% right. Room size is critical! Especially with a small room. What you are looking to do is make sure the room does not have any dimensions that are equal to another (or a multiple of that number). A 2m(H) by 2m(W) by 2.5m(L) space will cause no end of modal problems.

What you are looking for is to use ratios (the one above is 1:1:1.25, bad) that fall into "Bolt's Area" (Bolt's Area is a graph that shows good rectangular room dimension ratios for uniform modal frequency dispersion)

Good ratios would be
H - W - L
1 - 1.14 - 1.39 (Sepmeyer)
1 - 1.28 - 1.54 (Louden)
1 - 1.5 - 2.5 (Volkmann)

If you use Sepmeyer's ratio, take your height and multiply it by 1.14, that is the width of the booth. Take the height again, and multiply it by 1.39, that is the length it should be based on Mr. Sepmeyer's work. There other ratios out there (I used Volkmann's). I would highly recommend you get "Master Handbook of Acoustics". There is so much valuable information in there, it is my "Bible" for acoustics.

Possibly a stupid question, but...

Should the interior dimensions be measured from the inside "hard" surfaces or from the face of the treatment? If you are using rockwool or OC703, it could swing your dimensions 6" or more....

Thanks,
JAY

No that is not a stupid question.. You want to measure from the hard surfaces.
