| Gear nut | Has Anyone Used This Method? To make a port hole in your kick drum? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oJK2Y-uU9M Hah, it looks like it works pretty well. I think I may just try this out. |

| My drummer does it this way. It's the easiest, quickest way. If you get it hot enough it's great. If it's not hot enough though, it can come out jagged. Also you have to make sure the tension on the head is the same as how it will be played, otherwise if you tighten it after you burn the hole, it can turn out asymmetrical or crack. It's all very scientific, you see ![]() |

| Is there a specific area where you should cut the hole? Center, off center, side, somewhere in the middle?? Does it depend on the music to be played or size of the kick (resonant frequencies)?

| The bigger the hole the less rebound / resonance you're going to get. Placing it off to the side probably (guessing here but I am a drummer also) retains a bit more of the rebound since the blast of air would be more directed towards the center once you hit the beater. Having a hole bigger than about 6" or so is not much different (if any) than just having no resonant head at all. It's much easier to mic a drum if you have cut the hole in the center. War

| That hole is too small, I prefer the kit that mounts inside the drum, then you don't need a hole at all. They are really cool and make it a breeze for your live sound guy. |

| that method has been working for me, as a drum tech for the last 6 years. I like to use a slightly larger can, and an electric stove tends to work better and not create as many problems with lighting your kitchen on fire. off center, but at middle height seems to work best...about 3 o'clock. |
