Thread Starter | How should I treat this room?
This is a small space that has to double as an office area by day so I can't be too destructive but have some space to work within. There is an open ceiling above the drop tiles that goes up about another 8' or so. all the interior walls stop at the 9'7" mark. I tried taking the tiles out and didn't find much change in sound except it opened up a bit. I guess all the tile above coupled with the large space kinda cancelled out the expected result of the typical high ceiling larger room sound I was going for. The room sounded pretty muddy and small with stock tiles in ceiling and carpet on floor so what you see now is a make shift idea to try to brighten the tone and lengthen the decay while keeping direct reflections between floor and ceiling to a minimum. floor is 3/4" plywood and ceiling is 3/8" plywood with 1/8" masonite pitched reflectors. the sound is now brighter but not very controlled and still not long enough decay to be really usefull in distant miking situations. I use the room mostly for drum tracking. any advice I can get would help. I am pretty new to all this stuff. thanks

start making full range absorbers... check out the 'how i built my bass traps' thread.. your also not going to get nice decay times in that room...you would prolly need to spend lots of $$ i would just make it a really solid tight room...and build your decay and 'size' with a good lexicon verb nice place tho... |

are those your mics?!...dude... nice collection if so! i have not purchased traps from anyone...i made my own... i made 9 traps-6 inches packed mineral wool...with an extra 2 inches of space for future insulation.. for about 300 dollars...give or take.. you can get one trap 6 inches i believe for like...99 dollars.. if your the least bit handy they are REALLY easy to make.. and so far from just hanging up 2 in my mixing space..life is getting better..and easier. |

where do you source your mineral wool? would 703/705 be better? yeah, all the mics and gear in pics is mine but the room itself is owned by my day job company. Updates to the pic are an sm7, royer 122, at AE3000 (great top snare mic) adn beta 57. new preamps include sytek and Dan Alexander dual 1272. I am really lucky to have a nice room and enough clients to buy some nice stuff. I'm happy with everything i'm getting right now except the room sound for drums. close mics are great as is. I was hoping to get a bigger sound out of the room than I am. Thanks for the advice.

no problem.. i sourced my mineral wool from an independent insulation contracter here in pittsburgh. just looked in the yellow pages and called every place that sold insulation. this guy was the most helpful at first to see exactly what i needed..and once we figured out what kinds of insulation he had-i did the research on it, and for the cost of the mineral wool...it was the best choice for me-as well as my paranoia about fiberglass insulation..(my traps are in my bedroom) so he gave me a great deal 47 cents a square foot. 2x4 panels 2 inches deep. 703-705 is like 67 cents a square inch. and its much more stable.. like mineral wool will collapse if you stand it up on its own weight, the 703 wont. as long as you secure the mineral wool tightly then its fine..my traps are beautiful i'm very pleased. if your not pleased with the room sound for your drums, then i'd deaden the room and build it with verbs.. you have a very nice collection of mics and pre's so you can get quality sounds if you didn't have to deal with that rooms early reflections, and phase problems. some guys might tell you different...i would just say- you have more control over a reverb unit, than having no control over a rooms reverb response. P.S. i would put some throw rugs over that plywood.. just to kill vibrations on the floor- you can also-if you have the budget you can throw some mineral wool up in the drop ceiling as well.. idk how much you want to do to this space tho-

If you're pretty happy with everything except the drum sound now, I'd recommend just a couple of things. - A 4" thick cloud suspended 4" off the ceiling and parallel with the floor over the drum location. - Some broadband bass absorbtion in the corners. - Some thinner (say 2") absorbtion up high in the room and between all the glass.
