Which one is a bigger problem?

Currently I have:

Rode Nt1a with m-audio 1814's own preamps + 1814's own convertors

I am sensing there is something lacking, but I don't know which bit in my chain is the bottleneck.. If I buy I better preamp with digital outs to avoid the 1814 nearly completely would it sound much better than I buy a new microphone?

Is focusrite trakmaster good? I basicly have max 400$ to spend on anything at the moment, I know I can't buy a decent mic, so maybe a preamp can change the sound..

Any comments, advise highly appreciated!

Best regards and happy new year,

Emre

no... it is not..

save yourself a GREAT deal of trouble and headaches and save for a decent mic AND pre. Make do with what you have for the moment and hire in decent gear when you have really important days of recording. You will regret spending even $400 on cheap gear!

All the best

Try a different microphone. I think that's where you'll find a bigger difference.

you know, IMO trakmasters get a bad rep here, but they are pretty useful... before i had better preamps, all i had was a trakmaster and i did a lot of good stuff with it... and of course it beats the s**t out of the m-audio pres on your interface... for about $400 or less you can also get an oktava mkl-2500 tube LD condenser mic ,on ebay, which is a pretty nice mic... either will help you a lot..

Hi Emre

Thanks for your answer, it really makes sense, because there is nothing decent for a small amount of money, I tried tracking on neve vr at school and its SO different!! I can't explain what the difference is but it sounds "realistic" somehow. I cant get that @ home. The instrument is the same, the player is the same but the sound is amazing!..

PS: I think I met you once, couple of years ago I have been in one of your workshops in ACM I guess, about advanced drum editing. You are a drummer right. Also Emre and also from SAE? If I can remember it right?

+ 1 on the mic. The 1814 is useable as well as the M-Audio preamps. That's where I would start.
