| I would like to remove harshness. The female vocal which I record has voice harsh around 3khz. I hear that the ribbon microphone can record a soft sound. Can a ribbon microphone like Apex 205 ease this problem? |

| definitely. ribbons smooth out the top, but at 3k, you can eq a ribbon a bit more than a dynamic and condenser and it sound more natural. i love my fatheads!!! for a folk style tune or jazz, they are awesome!

| Thank you for the advices. I need to try a ribbon microphone on harsh female vocal. By the way, which is a Chinese ribbon good for female vocal? Or isn't there any big difference? I had forgotten to write the following. The female vocal sings pops, jazz, and bossa nova. She is a singer who raises up voice relatively. |

| Thank you always. Is fathead which you have I or II? And, is it modifying the transformer etc.? When modifying, is a big difference in it and stock? |

| Lives for gear | from my limited use of one of the fathead models (don't recall which one), I found it darker than the 205. the 205 doesn't sound dark but certainly isn't bright either and might be just right for what you're looking for. the fathead I used sounded quite dark by comparison but also very good and again with ribbons you can actually add highs with eq and get a good sound. either is prob great. Fathead was used in my case on a retro sounding project and was great. 205 I use all the time for current projects where I don't want a vintage vibe but do want the better qualities of a ribbon and don't want harshness. |

| Thank you, dkelley. The problem which I have is likely to be eased with a ribbon microphone. I try Apex first. |

| Lives for gear | no problem - I hope it works out well for you. the apex 205 is rebranded as some other manufacturer's microphones as well. just look for a ribbon motor that is about 2" long (give or take 1/4" inch in the specs) and a basic physical appearance that looks pretty much like an apex 205 but with different coloring and maybe subtle changes to the shape of the grille or other metal work. it's actually manufactured by a Chinese company - Alctron or some name like that - but in the rest of the world it seems to be most easily available as the Apex 205. |
