How to treat this room? (room diagram inside)

Hello!

I'm going to treat this room in the next 2 weeks and will build as many basstraps as needed to optimize the room. I'm going to put 2 of them (~20 cm deep) in every corner and I'd be interested to hear suggestions for placing the other ones (how much would make sense?) into other parts of the room.

Regards, Markus

I can vouch for Ethan's homemade basstraps.I have a similiar sized room as yours and alternated the different freq-traps along three walls and MOST of the forward wall.I also suspended an array of 703 panels from the ceiling. It's a tight little room! That's about the best you can hope for. I also opted for a caddy-corner monitor placement ,(placed out from a corner) which helped with the imaging. You HAVE to spend the time and money for a little room.As for the placement of the low,mid and high bass traps,go the Realtraps website and look for Ethans link on how to build a better bass trap.He mentions an alternating placement pattern that will pretty much help with the waves.Good luck!

The goal is just to put as many bass traps as you can through out the room. One thing you could think about is getting 703, cutting them into triangles and stack them for floor to ceiling. That will give you better bass control. But building 4 or 6 inch panels and straddling corners will work pretty well also.
You do want to make sure you do cover the first reflections in your room also.

I have a similar sized room (complete with windows in front of the desk) so I'll share what I'm going through right now:

I'm finding the bass traps aren't helping nearly as much as I'd hoped. I have 2' x 4' x 4" traps made of 8 pcf mineral fiber insulation in three corners and have an open doorway in the fourth corner (the room has an angle in the southeast corner for the door). I also have two 8pcf 2x4 panels on the west wall spaced 2" off the wall and two similar 703 panels mounted on the wall behind the mix position. I also stuck some Auralex LENRDs at the top of the back wall to help w/ reflections (no room for bigger traps). The east wall has 9 Auralex foam panels (1x1x2") which some noob glued up there a couple years ago. I did put up a temporary 2x4 panel of 703 over the foam, but found that it didn't really cure much and really was sucking a little too much "air" from the room.

Anyway, I think the best thing that'll happen to the room will be when I figure out a way to put a ceiling cloud over the mix position. (The ceiling is 5/8" sheetrock mounted on resilient channel, BTW).

If you have carpet on the floor (like me) and stick panels on every wall, you may not like what you hear (lifeless room). Be sure to experiment with panel placement before you commit.

Gotta go. Good luck!

Well, Glenn, then I'm getting 18 rock wool slabs (no 703 available here unfortunately) to build 18 bass traps. 8 for the corners, 2 on the sides for early reflections, 2 on the back wall, 2 above the mix position and the other 4 I have no idea yet. Would that be a good start?

That would be a very good start. You could play around with the remaining 4, maybe where the wall meets the ceiling(other than the corners). I did my corners and reflection points and it made a massive difference. Good luck with the project, it's a rewarding one

I'd also look at putting a couple of the 4" slabs centered on the rear wall to deal with the null that exists in almost all rooms off the back wall to the mix position.

Also, don't forget that horizontal corners along the wall/ceiling corners with the panels also mounted horizontally and straddling the corners will help considerably.

You have a room that is almost a cube and a small one at that. Almost a worst case scenario. You are going to want as much bass trapping as you can afford/fit.

Markus:

Treating all the corners is a great start. Keeping the room symmetric as much as possible - especially left-to-right on the front end - and covering the early reflection points is the next typical step.

I might add some heavy drapes to your plan and do something like the attached.

If you can get rid of the cabinet altogether or treat the front of it to make it diffusive or absorptive, that would be a nice touch also.

Good Luck!
