mixing drums - tutorial @ google video

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...ixing+tutorial

..not the best sound quality but intersesting 30 minute movie.
covers eq, phase, panning, gating, room mics and parallel compression..

one of many ways to mix live drums..

enjoy.

I think that movie it's a great example of showing everything that you shouldn't do! It's total BS. The younger guy on the right is the smart one, he utters an early warning about making EQ and other decisions while soloing the drums....and that's exactly what the Lowell George-ish looking guy is doing!

ALL mix decisions are done while staring at a screen and reading an 'Analyzer' plug-in, why not use your ears instead?

'The overhead mic is just for cymbals' I don't think so.

23 minutes into the video....'We haven't brought up the overhead mic yet'.......I guess leave it out at this point because it won't make any sense.

But it has to be said again, all EQ decisions are made while soloing drums and that's just wrong unless it's a solo performance which in that case it isn't.......

I know an engineer like this and I get the feeling he isn't unusual amongst live techs. All theory and book-learned technique but seemingly terrified of actually listening to what they're doing. Once I commented that the venue PA sounded a little scooped in the upper mids and his comment was "It can't be, the parametric is completly flat". As if the input to the speaker amps was always 100% correct or something, never occured to him to listen to the sound coming OUT of the speakers.

They have VERY FEW and VERY OBVIOUS points.

But still, I am glad the sound is in bad quality on this video. I am pretty sure it sounds better than if it was in good quality.

So any dipshit with a mic locker and a mouse is not only a producer but is now also able to give tutorials?

I would't hit a dog in the ass with dfegad 90% of what this guy was using for a mix approach and the other 10% is dodgy.

"we don't have an oscilloscope, so we'll have to use our ears" thumbsup

Some of these gearwire videos are alright, they have a bunch of clips of different FX pedals, but half of the video is spent reading the manual and describing in detail what all the knobs do...then they finally plug it in and actually USE it.

My big question is... who makes a video like this and thinks they have the skill/knowledge to share their "gift" with the world. As a young engineer, I would first like to say that there is a TON I don't know and will probably never know about audio. I would like to think the ego's on the engineer's side of the music industry was smaller than that of the musicians, but apparently I was wrong. Either way.. thank you to this community for sharing useful knowledge with me and I truly do appreciate all the top notch engineers here sharing all of their expertise with the little guy!

I have a few tutorial videos

but they're not really there for you if that makes sense.

it's meant to be encouragement.

Although I am guilty of posting saying "the dynamics between these two guys is a little enertaining, as it seems like they are about to argue the whole time" ; I must say that in general everyone is being pretty hard on these guys. They're tutorial overall is better done than some, and while there may be small bits of misinformation, it is none the less designed with good intentions. They are trying to share some information. Its not outstanding quality, but who cares, at least they did something.

Take it easy on them. Makes this forum look bad too.

Besides, would you rather it be 'Diamond Dave' giving the same tutorial?

I like that the mouse/keyboard operator has to hold his microphone and the other guys who don't have any "gear" to operate have boom stands.

We should go a little easy on these guys, at least they have an interest in this kind of stuff.

But yes, these videos are very pointless and just incoherent rambling. Maybe if they decided what they wanted to teach in the video, and wrote a script they could actually accomplish something.

My guess is that they all go to the same "recording school" and decided it would be fun to pull out the video camera and play grown ups. (Not that I'm a grownup, but I'm not putting tapes of my unorganized mix sessions and rambling on the internet)

These guys need to watch a few more tutorial videos, not make them, because this stuff really is useless.

I cracked up when the guy holding the mic said his headphones were on backwards..... then guy #2 took his off to see

So what is #3 doing ?????

no more than EQ boost than 5db it adds noise, phase, and kills the dynamics in the mix

These guys must work at Guitar Center.... I hope they aren't actually trying to make records

He hates 1K..... its ok for other stuff.... just not for drums
"its the Radio frequency"

The time they spent working on this would have been better spent tuning the drums
