Alesis MultiMix 16FIREWIRE, anyone know about this?

does this mixer work well as an interface? from what i've read, i get the impression that you can track 8 mono tracks and 4 stereo tracks at once out of it and into the computer via firewire. this thing is pretty cheap. has anyone used it, does it sound cheap? i'm not into the engineering aspect quite yet so i don't need some high end equipment right now. i run an sp12 and mpc1000 into a eurorack (8mono-4 stereo) mixer. i have a powerbook with digital performer. i haven't even used the dp yet. eventually i'd like to invest in mic's and start recording with the dp. would this multimix suit me? i don't need the best interface right now, but i don't want crap either. i'd really like to have as many channels as possible. i'd like to track all of my sounds individually, so i can take them to someone who knows what they're doing with mastering...this multimix sounds pretty good to me as far as the features and cost, is it? thanks much.....

I have used the Multimix 8 in a pinch (it was borrowed) for a last minute mobile voice over session and I thought it was a great little box. Certainly nothing touches it in price. When the digital is all crap you still have a useful little mixer too.

I would go for it if you want something to work on now and also still have some use later on. It think the converters sounded good too, but it's hard to tell with just one voice over track. I fed the line input with a Chandler Germanium pre and it sounded good.

I used this before returning it. The pre's are...well, okay. Noisy at high gain. Bland. It is a useable mixer though... but of course nothing really "great".

The firewire I used... worked okay, drivers were alright. For the price, it's great. Definitely a good price/performance point.

Note that I returned it so I could get more outs. The thing only supports stereo out from the DAW.
