PA system under $1000?

My band is interested in getting a new PA for practice and maybe house shows and such. We have nice and cables and stands so we don't need any of that in a package or anything. Just a mixer and speakers I guess. We have 4 vocals so I guess we just need 4 inputs...maybe one more for kick or samples.
Wed actually prefer a powered mixer since we need one for a show we're about to play..they have passive speakers there.
I don't know much about the subject so any help is appreciated. Oh also one that cnan be found on a site with payment plans would be a bonus since we're poor.

Thanks

Well first of whats your house size, and are you getting paid for these gigs? If it's just a jam band, throw together something for cheap and you'll be fine

If you are getting paid, and if you could swing more like $1400 a pair of Yamaha C112V's and a EMX5014C would pair nicely. that gives you a solid mixer with basic fx, eq, preamps, and good sounding speakers that are build very solid.

Well its more of an investment for future gigs and also vocal clarity at practice, not so much a specific show. The guys agreed on $1000 so i dont think there's much flexibility. At least not up to $1400...maybe $1200 but is rather not.

Okay,
EMX512SC with 2x BR12's should be doable for 900 if you get them to throw you a custom package. If you can swing $1100 here's one heck of a deal

I agree with the Yamaha EMX 512 suggestion. That is a great eight channel powered mixer.

You might try to find some used Yamaha SV15 speakers or Peavey SP5's. They can be found fairly inexpensively on the used market. Failing that, the BR15 Yamaha speakers would work as would Peavey PV 115's.

Don't get a powered mixer just because of one future gig. They've probably already got an amp? If not you could rent one.

A small mixer (I recommend an A&H Zed 10FX, but you could get cheaper or more channels) and a couple of light 10" speakers will double nicely for rehearsal and for monitors, leaving you able to expand later. I've personally gone with Mackie SRM 350s as the best bang for the buck for monitors.

The mixer I mentioned is about $300 and the speakers are $500+ each. Of course there is the used market.
