Playing analog synth at live gig

Alright so I've been doing a lot of research on this but can't seem to find the right answer. My band is implementing an analog synth (Roland Juno 106) to our music and a few of our songs now include the juno. We'll be playing gigs in a few months and I was wondering how to use the synth live. Now I don't want to use the juno on stage (because of fear of damaging it during transportation/one of the voice chips crapping out mid-set) but rather send the sends to another keyboard and play that instead. I'm assuming that I'd somehow send the juno sounds to my macbook and then connect my macbook to a midi controller which we'd use on stage. I don't know if this is the right/most efficient method but I'd appreciate if anyone knew how to do this.
Thanks.

There are a few ways to do this which really depends on how you've used the Juno in your compositions.

If you've played melody lines with the Juno, trying to capture the sound in a sampler (you might be using your Mac book for this) with as good a set of filtering capabilities as possible to replicate any programmed modulation you've programmed into the Juno sound.
In this case I believe the sampler you chose is vital for how well you can recreate the sound live.

If you've used the Juno to create a loop in your music then I'd sample in the entire loop and trigger it from a key on your controller keyboard. The sampler could be a hardware unit like a K2000 which can be had for cheap nowadays.

I'd trust a hardware sampler over a Mac book any day, especially on stage. This goes for any laptop type device. In fact I'd take a vintage sinth on stage before I took a laptop. I just think they look a bit lame, although they are getting more commonplace.

Also, I can't stress enough how important power conditioning will be to run any of this... Get a good supply filter /UPS.

Here comes an answer You probably don't want:

As any band with a keyboard player worth their salt used to do was play Analog synths on the road. They had road cases and were careful, just as a drummer is with his cymbals, and other stuff. To further reinforce this inclination, think of how much extra ish will be involved in Your live setup if You do what You are suggesting. More to lug, more to lag, more cable to ravel (latency?) and all that.

Don't get mi wrong, I love mi rack, big speaker cabs, pedalboard, and PK-5 footcontroller. I am all for being elaborate. I am of the school of thought to do what sounds best, and to get it in a way that requires minimal effort.

Alright guys thanks a lot, definitely helped me out. Another quick question though, a lot of the bands I listen to use analog synths in their music, on stage they use Edirol PCRs as midi controllers. Is it possible to load the juno sounds directly into the midi controller?

What WT said.

Is the Juno so flimsy that you can't take it on the road? They built them to last back then.
I agree with previous posts. Take care of and guard your gear on the road and play the real thing.

Horses for courses, laptops are great for some sampled sounds, but ya gotta have hardware synths if you are into tone and timbre. My setup is the Minimoog for bass lines plus the two M Audio 88 note keyboards. Man we now got the best of both worlds, enjoy it!.

Thanks a lot guys. Looks like I'm just gonna invest in a good travel case instead and bring the juno with me. Seems like the easiest and best way to go.

You could also leave the 106 back stage and connect it to a MIDI controller on stage.

I traveled for years with a 106 on stage with me and it never failed. They are built pretty tough, unlike a lot of newer plastic synths these days. Make sure the battery is in good condition.

Yep, make sure you know what kind of power supply you're dealing with. As with any gig, you should check power points for correct earthing prior to plugging gear into them. There's a simple plug I use with led's that indicates whether a power point is property wired @ gigs.
I once had a valve amp crap out because the venue had a dB meter wired up to the stages power points and we tripped the threshold. Look out for that one with any valve equipment (needs a proper earth).
