How to hook up a subwoofer to PA monitors

Hey guys, haven't been on here in a while but I was just starting to get into DJing locally and bought myself a pair of Behringer Eurolive B212A.

My setup is a little non-traditional to say the least.

Laptop to Emu 1616M Interface. From there, balanced left and right 1/4" outputs from the interface to XLR inputs on the PA speakers.

I want to add a sub and I know the best way to do it is get a sub with balanced inputs and outputs so I can hook up the interface to the sub's XLR inputs and hook up the PA speakers to the sub's XLR outputs for a perfect crossover. However, subs with that feature cost a lot more than ones with a simple RCA input and lowpass filter.

I was wondering if I can take the extra 1/4" outputs from the interface and send them into RCA inputs on a subwoofer. Or take the 1/8" stereo output from the interface and plug it into the RCA inputs on a sub. Is it possible and if so, should I use a 1/4" to RCA cable or 1/8" (stereo output) to RCA cable?

It is possible to use the 1/4" outputs from your interface. I don't think it matters if you use 1/4" or 1/8" (3.5mm) as RCA is unbalanced, so either way you're going into the subwoofer unbalanced.

Thanks, now I can buy a $50 subwoofer instead of a $300 one.

Anyone else have any suggestions or comments?

They make a powered $50 subwoofer? I can't see anything less than the EV 122s being useful, and those are unpowered and cost $300. Is there a powered sub for less than $400?

Take it from the Link out of one of the Behringers.

Subs are generally dealing with stuff below about 150hz and that should all be mono (therefore the information is in both the L and R signals) so it shouldn't really matter which on you pick.
