iPod to PA

Hello hello,

I would like to find a product that allows me to output an iPod into a PA system (two speakers), via XLR. I've been looking at DI boxes and mixers (under £100), but I can only find things that output one or two 1/4 outputs or one XLR output.. I was hoping to find a product that would give me a line in and two (L/R) XLR outputs, one going to each speaker. Via one of these DI's I've found that have one XLR output, I was thinking I could output into one of my speakers, then use an XLR cable to output from that speaker into the other speaker.. but is that good for sound quality? And surely you wouldn't get the effect of panning? The other thing I thought with the DI's that output via two 1/4 outputs is outputting via two 1/4 jack leads, then using those 1/4 to XLR adaptors (like this 1/4” Stereo Socket to XLR Plug : XLR Adaptors : Maplin Electronics) to plug direct into each speaker. But then is sound quality compromised?

I have a 16 channel mixer that outputs L/R via XLR, but I want something small and portable, specifically for using an iPod. Can anyone recommend some gear or solutions please?

Thanks!

3.5 mm to two jack plugs into a dual DI and Xlr out.

Easy.

Have no Internet other than my phone atm, so you'll have to google for specific products, but any generic 3.5mm to dual RCA lead would work, then grab a pair of RCA to quarter inch jack plugs and whack them on the end.

Then just do a google search for a dual in and dual out DI, buy that and a couple of xlrs and you're good to go. You could even get lucky and find a DI that accepts RCA inputs, which would mean you don't have to buy the adapters.

All else fails just buy two DIs.

This one should be great
Radial JDI Duplex Mk4 stereo passive direct boxes
You will still need a 3.5mm to 2 RCA cable.

I use these almost daily with our LS9-32.

Radial ProAV1 | Sweetwater.com

Great little box for all media sources. Just add the 1/8" to RCA cable and you're set.

Since you're using a device with an active output (ipod) very basic transformer coupled direct boxes should do a fine job.

Rapco/Horizon makes a stereo unit but personally I'd choose two individual direct boxes, that way if one goes bad, it's easy to sub in an alternate.

For cable use a mini-TRS stereo to two 1/4 inch plugs.
Put one 1/4 phone plug into each direct box.
For convenience or to simulate a stereo direct box strap the two direct boxes together with a bit of gaff tape.

A direct box will step the line level output of your ipod down to a balanced mic level so you'll need to plug into microphone inputs to have the right level.

We run an iPod Touch to play backing tracks at live shows all the time so I know this works and sounds good.

You can spend a lot more on an expensive Radial or other DI box but for this application it won't net you much in frequency response or benefit. The main drawback of inexpensive transformer DI boxes is, they load down passive musical instrument outputs and change the tone. That does not matter since you're using an ipod. In my experience even the inexpensive transformer DI boxes sound good with active sources like keyboards or ipods or CD players.

Best of luck to you.

Question: Powered speakers or PA head? Why XLR? Input section has no RCA? What about the long run between the two speakers? Why hassle with finding 1/8"-to-XLR stereo when 1/8"-to-RCA into PA head would be much simpler? Just askin'. I use RCA into the mixer tape-in all the time. Works great, stereo.
