PA for Acoustic Singer/Songwriter

I'm an acoustic singer/songwriter and plan on playing mostly coffee houses / churches / smaller venues. My parents have a Bose L1 Model 1 and swear by it. I love how it sounds but think it's a little pricey for what it is.

What would you recommend I buy?

I drive a Toyota Yaris Sedan, btw, so portability is an issue.

I have, and like a Fender Acoustasonic Jr. We get all my kit in the trunk of a Toyota Solaris.

Thanks for the tip! I'll look into that as well. Right now I'm really leaning towards the Bose Compact (since most my shows that don't have their own sound system will likely be in rather small venues). I may eventually buy a second Compact and chain them together :-)

A used 200 watt 10" or 12" powered speaker ($300). A speaker stand ($60). And a used 4 channel mixer ($150-175).

Alternately some speakers have multiple inputs and you can plug right into them.

Things I assume you have or will get: a mic, a mic stand, 2 mic cables (one for the mic, one for mixer to speaker), an instrument cable, an extension cord with 2-3 outlets (mixer and speaker).

Upgrades: a second speaker to use as a monitor, a third speaker and stand for rooms that are wide and need additional coverage, a graphic equalizer and some simple training on how to ring out a speaker.

I think I paid about $325 for the Fender.

If it's just you and a guitar a modern powered speaker like a QSC K8 or K10 can mix two inputs. Smaller and easier to set up than the Bose. A pair of them will blow away a single Bose set up for the same price. A single will sound much better and be easier to deal with. On another thread, a fellow found that a K8 was enough for him to play synths, edrums and sing through. I've been trying to talk a dance instructor I know into one so play her iPod dance tracks and an MC mic though instead of farting out a boombox.
