Question Music over Convention Ctr PA

I produce the City-Wide Garage Sale here in Austin and
in the past have played music over the PA. The problem is
that the CDs I was using were all 'oldies' compilations and
were all over the place as far as levels go. We were having
to basically ride the fader from song to song which eventually
led to us abandoning using music altogether.

I'd like to give it another try this time using a limiter of
some sort... you guys have any ideas about which one
and how I could set this up?

I have a Sony CD player that I run into a Mackie 1202...

thanks

A compressor rather than a limiter would work, but the louder songs would be over compressed if you try to compress enough to bring the softer ones up in volume.

Can you get the music ahead of time? If so you could bring the tunes into a program like Pro Tools and adjust the levels so they are all the same. Then burn new CDs.

Or bring all the songs into iTunes. In iTunes you can set a different volume level for each song, and it will remember it. Then use iTunes to set up a playlist and playback directly from the laptop, or burn new CDs with the new volume settings.

Well... the itunes solution is just too easy. I wasn't aware
that you could adjust individual tracks in itunes or have itunes
do a program level (we'll see how that works)... thanks for the info!

From itunes help:

* Some songs or videos in your iTunes library may be louder or quieter than average. To adjust the volume of a particular song or video, select it, choose File > Get Info, click Options, and then drag the Volume Adjustment slider left or right. iTunes will use this setting each time the song or video plays.

* To have all songs and videos always play at the same volume level, choose iTunes > Preferences, click Playback, and then select Sound Check.

Yes, adjusting the level while copying each disk is the way to go.
IMO, adding a stereo compressor during the live event (for extra measure) can be the icing on the cake.

Compressed icing is good!

And cake without icing is -- well, it's just cake!
