A Speaker Is Just A Speaker right?

I mean, that is to say, aside from quality, guitar and bass speakers are really the same, it's only the amplifier that changes. Just that and speaker size right?

Some Speakers Are Much More Efficient Than Others, in other words, an efficient speaker will be a bit louder & more responsive than an in-efficient speaker. When overdriven, Alnico magnet speakers have a smoother, creamier distortion than Ceramic magnet speakers. As far as guitar amplifiers are concerned, I think the best sound is closely matching the power handeling capabilities of the speakers to the total power output of the amplifier. If you have 4 25 watt speakers wired together in a 4/12 cabinet, it would make a good match with a 100 watt amplifier. Using a 100 watt speaker with a 25 watt amplifier doesn't sound as good, much more harsh & colder sounding.

guitar speakers are not necessarily bass speakers.....modern bass speakers are capable of handeling great amounts of power, which requires larger voice coils & thicker cone materials. They also require more power to be driven than smaller, lighter & more efficient guitar speakers.

oh no ... a speaker is a unique color

All Eminence are different, all Celestions are different, Tone Tubby, Weber, Jensen, Rola ....

well, just like mics, speakers are transducers. You can get dynamic, condenser and ribbon, that's a big difference when it comes down to speakers.

Guitar and bass speakers are about as different (or similar) as guitar and bass amps. That's to say they could be exactly the same, as in the case of Fender amps, a few components difference like early Marshall amps, or they could be very different.

But yes, ignoring the quality and size of parts and various design choices, a speaker is just a speaker (with a few exceptions like ribbons & such). But why would you want to ignore that stuff?

I'm going for vintage sound, so anything modern I'm leaning from as much as possible.

I'm going for a real Link Wray sound.

Thanks y'all.

You could just about reverse the order here, and have it just right.

Well I know from using live PA gear you want the best speaker efficiency as possible Meyer, JBL, and EAW come to mind. Some PA speaker comanies market outrageous specs. especially in the DJ market there claims are not even from planet earth i.e. if yo buy x brand of speaker it peaks at billion watts and RMS at million, that's pure BS after reading through the speaker specs. they have a piss poor efficiency rating but most consumers don't do their home work and go by wattage thinking wow these speakers are rated a billion watts thinking that they are actually gonna get a billion watts out of them but not here in the real world called planet earth. I've seen this time and time again with PA speakers and the poor consumer goes home plugs up his new billion watt speaker and ask their self why isn't this thing louder then my boom box. So yea speakers are a live sound person bread and butter.

"Anyone who plays guitar can play bass...." -

how I loath that concept everyone seems to hear from time to time...

anyway, back to topic, for a seriously long time, and due to my ultra low budget, I recorded my bass tracks using a Deville 4x10. The bass was a maple necked Fender Jazzbass, and some distortions here and there, some guitarpick elektro-like grooves...

Damn I got really good results. And recorded with volume like, at 3 !! Great punch!
