cheap bass amp for recording solution

I'm wondering if any bass players can lend an opinion. I currently record bass through a DI only (tg-2 > distressor) It sounds great, but it lacks the bite of an amp. I've considered saving up for a b15 or Orange tube jobby, which I will do at one point but I really cant get too loud either.

will any of these pre-amps sound like an amp? like the Demeter/ampeg etc?

or do any of these cheap little solid state jobs sound good? like the orange crush 20b or swr 10"?

or is there, like guitar, a low watt tube bass combo. (like the swr baby blue or something - does this even sound good?)

(I should mention I have 2 Fender american basses. A hot rodded p-bass and a Jazz V)

i hate paying amps in music stores. even if it's quiet enough and there's no stupid sales dude up my ass it's never the same when i get it home! if i can at least narrow my search down . . .

thanks!

my bass recording chain as latly and thinking in the same direction as you are rigt now is:

bass into sansamp bassdriver pedal, from there into micinput of ltd-1 into distressor in opto mode into rig.
the sansamp pedal has a second output ("processed") which i often feed into a normal tube guitar head. since i do mostly rock and harder stuff ,this is 99% a dual rectifier, but in clean channel, but the push feature engaged. i set gain just that it starts to enrich and saturate, but n distortion. i dial in lots of mids.
the cab with v30 is miked with an sm57, into another ltd, into another distressor, but set to 1176 style compression. i do smack this signal a lot, whereas the forementioned opto style distressor just lightly compresses.
come mixtime, i just blend those two signals. it helps to nudge the DI track a little back to align with the mic signal.

no dedicated bass amp here, and so far all the bass players liked the results.

I do run my bass through a guitar set up, but i'd like to get a dedicated system. also guitar speakers aren't meant to play bass. so I use my mesa recto pre. . . doesn't always work . . .

Cheap Bass Amp solution? How about a LabSeries L9, 1 15" in it. Mine has a JBL but they did come with an EV that sounded kinda good. I have used it in the past with pretty good results. Maybe you can find one used on the cheap. Just thought I would throw that idea out there

Check out Genz Benz combos. They aren't super cheap, but they are quality amps, for both bass and guitar. My current guitar head is a Genz Benz El Diablo 100 and it kicks ass, and for bass I used to have a Genz Benz rig (sold it and then had to get a new bass rig). Try their 2x10 or 1x15 combos.

The original Baby Blue is my favorite SWR amp ever. But for the same price, you could buy a vintage B-15, which is arguably the greatest studio bass amp ever. I think I paid $350 for mine (a few years ago). Another small bass amp to check out is the Trace Elliot BLX 80. No longer made, surprisingly good sounding but decidedly Trace Elliot. I was never thrilled with my big Trace Elliot in the studio but I'd imagine the BLX 80 would do ok.

Have you tried the new baby blue? does it compare? I'd love a b-15 - I gotta troll ebay . . .

I really like my re-issue tweed single 12" Fender Blues Deluxe.

Great for jams, rehearsal and tracking.

I haven't tried the newer BB. If they still make them, it'd be worth trying one.

The B-15 is big in size but the cabinet is terribly inefficient so it never really gets too loud. A 40 watt guitar amp could easily drowned out a B-15. Of course, it's not for every person or every app. I also have a SWR redhead for that very reason. They're two ends of the spectrum. OTOH, as you get closer to the cleaner SWR tone, you can probably DI a similar tone. The SWR BB I used had a really special thing happening in the mids.

There are two other threads about it already, but I've been having a blast with my new
Epiphone Valve Jr Head through my SVT 8 X 10 cabinet.

Does some very sweet stuff to my '64 jazz bass on low volume.

If you take that signal into another mic pre the possibilities are endless.

Seriously the best $99.00 I've ever spent on anything and I'm all grins!
