engl guitar preamps anyone ?

I'm looking into the more affordable ES530 ... at $479 it seems like a very good deal but I can't get a demo down here, is it as good as it seems ? or should I save up for the special edition preamp ? http://www.englampsusa.com/products.asp?sku=E530

I've never heard this unit, but judging by what I have heard of their product line, I'd say it is a great value.

They won't let you send it back if you don't like it? Give them a call and see...

yes ! it seems like a great deal indeed, most pedals I've researched cost a little less, so I figured for a little more I could have a 4 channel rack pre, where's cdog when you need him ?

I'll get in touch with them and see if they take it back if I hate it ... if I end up keeping it I think I'll upload some sound files

That's probably the cheapest ENGL available... wouldn't call it expensive.

I have the Engl E570. My two cents is... If you want a great, brutal, hi-gain/metal tone, this thing was born to rock. It has some very nice, silky cleans too, but everything inbetween, I was a little disappointed with. It's hard to describe. It has some programmable features that let you "customize" your presets, but all the semi-distorted or Marshall-esqe tones just sound like they have some kind of weird coating on them. Do I love the amp? Absolutely. I bought it for the hi-gain tones and anything else it can do is a bonus.
I use it with an Egnater M4 modular rack preamp which does a beautiful job on the clean-crunch tones, but imo, doesn't quite get the thick, tight hi-gain stuff very well. The two together are all I will ever need for recording.
If you need a jack of all trades amp, I'd recommend the Egnater over the Engl, but if you mainly just want some cleans and a killer hi-gain tone, then the Engl E570 won't disappoint you. From the clips I've heard of the 530, I think it is more in the crunch zone than the metal zone.
I hope this helps.

yes it does thanks I'm looking for an aggressive sound so I can only hope I made the right choice, I can't get any demos where I live ...

I'm kinda nervous though ... I hope it lives up to the hype and it's worth all the $ I spent, when it gets here I'll post my impressions

GOT IT ...

first impressions ...

all I can say at the moment is WOW ... sounds very very good with my setup, very aggressive sound, thick and rich, has a hi fi vibe to it, very cool cleans ... I still have to hear how it records but so far I'm diggin it thumbsup

BTW guitarzan, when I push the preamp defeat function I have to turn off the unit to get it back to normal (pre engaged) ... is this how it should work ?
