Ambient Drone Noise

What are you guys using for that Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, and trippy Lanois ambient sound?

Well for MBV I would start with a tremolo arm, an analog delay, and Wierd tunings. Track a 1000 takes per guitar part. If you're recording analog mess with the tape speeds or in DAW use time/pitch corrections in a way they weren't meant to be used.

As above plus modulated delay (a delay where an LFO is applied to the pitch of the delayed signal). If you put this delay into an overdriven amp or even distortion pedal you get a very trippy sound, Lanois does that all the time.

Good units for this are the Korg SDD3000, some of the old Ibanez delay pedals and some Roland racks. The current line 6 m and hd series have good modulated delays too...

Boss looper, tape delay, chorus, instant lofi, volume pedal, compressor, overdrive, tremolo, big reverb are all things I keep avail when creating ambient soundscapes. I don't always have every one on...

Putting a reverb before a distortion, then some chorus and delay should get you pretty far.
