bass advice please!!

ok, I bought a VM squier p-bass to get gigging with cause I had a gig coming up and a crap bass! Just bought the TC electronics bh500 and the matching 4x10 to go with it and now I am looking to get a good bass...hear is what I was thinking about, I would like to spend the least amount possible, I am kinda new to bass so I am not sure on the quality of some of these!!

1. Fender american Special
2. fender american Standard (the most I could spend, and wish I did not have to)

3. a differnt brand p-bass that plays as well as the AS

what would you guys do? thank you for your help!

I would stay away from the American Special, they don't inspire me at all...But that's a personnal and subjective opinion.

The American standards though can be awsome, you just have to try alot of them and find yours. For whatever reason, I've tried some that had the sweetest necks and some I could barely play. Alot of difference between every one of them...

An American Standard instrument is a solid value, and if you buy used you will lose little to no money if you decide it's not for you and sell it.

People just don't understand that you lose so much money with crap instruments once you want to sell them... they're worth nothing.

Best of luck!

ya, thats the same thing a lot of people have said about the specials, I am a TBer and they all said the same thing! I have found a few used AS, one guy wants $900, and another guy wants $850...the 850 one is 5 years old but in great shape....are the newer ones better than the older ones?

New AS stratocasters and Telecasters are definately nicer than their 2007 and lower predecessors, but I'm not sure about the basses. Thing is, people don't always realize that Fenders vary as much as Gibsons in terms of neck feeling, playability, etc. So you have to try alot of them before you buy.
