Line6 variaxe

Just found this, its a bit beat up, its a black double cutaway 6 string electric (look like a cross between a Strat and Les Paul Junior)

I have the pedal but not the power supply - will it work without - the pedal?

Do I need a stereo lead or something to go between the pedal and the gtr? I forgot how to use this!

It has a battery in the back of the GTR ... is the pedal / power to save on batteries?

Thanks

I just got one and love it not for studio use but for live use. Bringing one guitar for 3 different tunings sign me up!

Anyways the gtr should work without the pedal however it does go through batteries quickly. All you need is a stereo cable to hook up to the pedal.

Jules, I work for Line 6.... Can you send me a pic of it to be sure? If it does not have pickups then it sounds like the older discontinued model. If it has a Strat like headstock it's a 300/600. If it's more squared off it's a 500/700. If it's body is more contoured like a PRS it's the 700.

These models all need a stereo 1/4" cable for using the XPS-DI box. One side of the cable powers it, the other side sends the audio. You can use batteries and a regular cable. Not sure how many hrs you get on a set though. The 300 uses a slightly different XPS-DI box than the 500/700/600 models. You will need the power supply to power the XPS-DI box to power the guitar. We have a standard Line 6 power supply that goes up to 2000 mA. It's called the PX2 that can be ordered from any music store.

The new James Tyler Varax models run on lithIon batteries, like a camcorder rechargable battery. If the battery does run out, you still have standard mag pickups but you lose the modelling and alt tuning capability. I usually have a backup battery charged and waiting should that happen, but you can easily get a whole 4hr set and then some on 1 charge.

Cheers, Andy

I was really hoping to try the new James Tyler Variax at NAMM. I was lusting after a 700 before, but the new ones look impressive with the standard pickups as well.

The new ones are great! Latency is rediculously low, especially on models like the 12 string. The alt tuning option / virtual capo is pretty slick! I use the Asian made one everyday for TV and commercial work, as well as live. They are made in the same factory as the PRS SE line. You'd be hard pressed to say it doesn't feel like a USA made guitar. The price point is well worth the feature set! Worlds above the 700! I'm sure they will be on hand to try out.

The latency kind of bugged me on the bass models, plus they didn't really seem to punch. The multiple guitars plus weird tuning thing makes me really interested in picking one up. I'm a little bummed they didn't include one or two "shredder" style guitars from the Jackson/Ibanez days of metal.

The Les Paul models are fairly hot, not EMG hot, but as far as mag pup modeling goes. Just pick up a JTV-89 model for that metal feel and you'd be pretty close to that game.

Here it is. Is it a. 700?

I have lost the back plate for the battery cover and the (UK plug) power supply for the pedal.

It looks like the 500 .. which if i,m not mistaken has the same electronics as the 600/700.
I have this 500 model in a Lefty, the only Lefty they did. They dont make Lefties anymore.
Anyhow Jules i hope you get it up and running because You will have all those Keef open tunings at the flick of a switch
One thing tho, the variax really shines in conjunction with the "Workbench" software..allows you to mix and match pick ups .. say p90,s on Tele etc.
Plus more.
I,m not sure if it comes free now.
I like the neck profile and its paint free with a satin feel on the back of the neck

Jules, that is a 500. We haven't made that in probably 7 years I'm guessing. So battery plate parts for it are long used up. I'll dig around and see if there are any non working ones laying around for parts. As far as the power supply, the standard PX2 which is the same one used for all the POD 2.0, XT, X3 will work, of course with the UK style plug.

FromOhio, Once we can get caught up to the demand of the initial JTV, it's probably inevitable you'll see other versions appearing. I know we have a lot of lefty artists who are eagerly waiting. My buddy Carlos Rios still uses his lefty 500 on tour with Stevie Nicks with his HD500 and DT50 rig. When he finally can get a JTV Lefty he'll have the ultimate dream rig! BTW if you want to sell yours he's looking for backup...

I got to sit in the back room with a couple friends at NAMM and play a JT Variax. It was a really nice guitar and the modeling was really tight. Flip a few switches and you have a resonator in DADGAD tuning, a sitar-guitar in drop D or Baritone Telecaster. Pretty impressive tracking and tone modeling, plus it played really well.
I will definitely be trying to get my mitts on one this year.

Does the new JT allow different tunings with the sitar model?

I can't answer definitively (maybe see if they have a manual posted in pdf format?), but when I played it at NAMM it seems like you could either set the tuning to the "model" mode, i.e. default for the instrument, or you could turn the tuning knob to any variation and bypass the model's tuning. So in theory you could have a Drop D, DADGAD or Baritone sitar. I believe you could do this on any instrument.

Great, thank you for your answer. A decent electric 12 strings is virtually impossible to come by here in Oslo where I live, so this might be my answer.
