I have no answer for you but I'd like to know why do you need to remove anything from the sm57 to record guitar

This is an sm7b ... To get the mic closer to the amp . The grill prevents me from doing so .... Maybe its not supposed to come off for a good reason but I'm checking here first ... Nobody taken the grill off ?

Sorry, I misread the mic name! Anyway I doubt you will achieve better results moving the mic so close to the grill, unless you are seeking the boominess of the proximity effect.

Sorry, I just had to

About your question: I dont know, but I know that there is no protection left to the capsule - and I would not recommend that.

What kind of sound are you after? What cab are you recording? What speaker?

Maybe there is another way to get it right!

This is actually pretty funny
.... i wont need to get the grill off after all... i was orig trying to record a peavey classic 30 at lower volumes because its pretty loud at my place. Also i was hoping to get the mic real close or at least have the option of getting the mhic practically on the amp cloth just to experiment....in the end it was just fine withought taking the grill off and yes theres no protection without the grill

Good then. The Peavey is a nice sounding amp. As far as I am informed you can pull out 2 of the 4 EL84 tubes (the middle ones) to reduce the 30 Watts to 15 Watts - maybe that helps to get the volume level down a bit.

Really had no idea about that...thank you!!! 15 watts might enable me to keep the tone I want but at a lower volume

I do that all the time, my Marshall JCM800 runs on tone bones with EL84, most of the time on 2 tubes - and sounds amazing.

For that early ACDC sound I have 2 NOS RCF-tubes (with these, 50 watts is more than enough).
