Use the FX loop to get good cleans?

I have a Peavey 5150 mkII and it has monster overdrive and distorted sounds in abundance. I love it! And the same can be said for the Mesa Rectifier series - monster distortions and overdrive sounds. But both sets of amps have so so, not so great clean tones IMO. So the question...

Is it possible to patch-in a preamp that does a great clean sound into the FX loop of either the 5150 or Rectifier amps to get some kind of great clean sound?

What are your thoughtson this?

Sure there are preamps to do this, The Barber Barb EQ gives a range from Blackface to Tweedy cleans, Then there is the Boss FDR-1 which apes a Blackface, can be set clean to dirty. Those are two i know off the top of my head.

Possibly the Tech 21 Character Series, just about a pedal for every major brand of amp there, but i am not sure how clean they can get....
