Thread Starter | Need a new speaker cab
I am on the hunt for a speaker cab for my 20watt Laney Lionheart head. Its 3 12ax7 and 4 el84. I am looking for descriptions of speakers. I have a celestion g12h in my combo but I am looking for a different tone. I find the top end is a little bright for my guitar. What speaker/cab would give me a smoother top end but still provide some bite? Any suggestions?

The G12H30 (I assume that's what you're talking about) is pretty bright, and most of it's derivatives are as well (G12-65, V30 etc). The "Blue" is smoother when it breaks up, but the clean sound is still pretty bright. The G12M25 (greenback) is quite a bit smoother, and some of the other companies building them make them even smoother with hemp cones and so forth. You might check on the Emminence and WeberVST websites, they have descriptions and comparisons of the speakers they make that might help. Who do you want to sound like? |

david gilmour LD sound. larry carlton with steely dan. It would be nice to have a speaker that can take a brightness boost but not be bright without it.

G12M. Ideally an old twenty watt, add as many as you need. Or if you are feeling crazy, four ten inch ones! |

Gilmore uses Fane speakers. Reeves builds a copy. A buddy of mine has a 2x12 Reeves with the Fane copies they call "Purples". He's a huge Gilmore fan and says they work for that stuff. I've heard them, they do sound nice. Not Cheap!! DaveT |

Fanes are GREAT speakers, loud as hell and bright without being ice-picky. The purples are copies of a particular Fane, not built exactly like it but built to sound like it (it's a distinction the Fane guys, who are still around, like to point out). Fanes are expensive but you can buy fairly accurate copies from WeberVST (the Thames) and Emminence (Big Ben maybe?) that'd work really well for what you want.

Any opinions on the Blackstar artisan 2x12? i got a hookup to get one at cost but Im not familiar with the vintage 30's. It would be a buy without try situation but the cost is to low to pass up. I figure I can always put something else in. Thanks for all the other suggestions. Gonna check em out.
