6505+ Tone

Hey guys,

So I got a 6505+ to use for live stuff recently and I'm running it through the orange look-alike Avatar 4x12 with V30s in it. My signal chain is - Boost/Tuner/Bad Monkey/Dyna-Comp/Crybaby/DD7 Delay/NS2 directly into the amp. I don't use the FX loop just because I've heard so much bad stuff about it causing problems on the 6505+ models.

Anyways, I'm having a tone dilemma. I started out on the 6/6/6 settings and adjusted them to roughly 5.5-6.5 on Pre gain, 6.5 bass, 5 on mid, 6.5 treb, usually 3-4 post in live settings, 6.5 resonance, and a 5.5 on presence (all of this is the lead channel mind you). I normally never use the bad monkey because it just sounds like crap and I really don't need it any way.

I play technical/progressive stuff (a bit on the heavier side) and I'm getting plenty of gain, I'm just having some pretty muddy tone right now when I get up on the post gain (up around 3-4). It sounds decent at bedroom volume. I'm trying to make it articulate with nice gain but not over-the-top high end. For some reason, whenever I drop the pre-gain back a bit to try to clean up the tone, it just gets really really thin.

Anyways, my question to you guys is this: Do you guys have any suggestions for a tighter/cleaner sound on the 6505+? I've always been pretty bad with getting good distortion tone on high gain heads. I've been able to dial the clean channel in quite well, I've actually been pretty amazed that it sounds as good as it does, I'm typically pushed away from the clean tone on high gain Peaveys. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Those things get muddy real quick...try lowering the pre gain to 10 or 11 oclock, bass 11 oclock, mids 2 oclock (this may indirecty appear to lower/tighten bass. Anthing above that on bass & pre gain gets you into extreme territory
The crunch channel many people love, but you will need to sacrifice the clean live
