£800 for a 'heavier' guitar

Hi Guys,

I recently bought a Fender Stratocaster, and I love it, it's my first 'great' guitar. The tones I get out of it are just beautiful, but it soon dawned on me that I need a bit of chunk in my sound too, and am looking into a humbucking guitar. I used to have an Ibanez RG370DX, which was great, but I've grown up now, and don't particularly need a Whammy Bar. I'm Left Handed, which hinders things a little, and am wanting a brand new guitar for £800 at the absolute most.

I've been looking at this.

Gibson SG Special 60s Tribute in Worn Satin Natural Left Handed | Andertons

Any suggestions? recommendations?

Just need a more versatile guitar than the Strat, and figured something like an SG will help cover both bases.

Thanks,

Jampottt

I don't think there's a substitue for trying guitars out at a store. Pick the one that you connect with. Hands are quirky things and taste in tone and sound are so individual.

The guitar in that link has P-90 pick ups, which are single coils.

If you're looking for a "heavy" sound you should probably just go with a Les Paul. That's the sound of pretty much every hard rock/metal recording of the past 40 years, and the standard humbuckers are pretty great. You can also always go with some after-market pickups - I love DiMarzios.

This is bang on. The best thing you can do is go into your nearest guitar store and try out as many guitars that fit your price range. Also look second hand if you're happy to - you're likely to get a lot more guitar for your money - brand new you're looking at low end gibsons, fairly decent Ibanez, and the higher end ESP LTD series. Second hand you'd get a 'midrange' gibson, higher end Ibanez and possibly an ESP if you play your cards right!

If I were you, I'd literally try anything you can find that fits the brief and price range. And if possible through your amp, or one you know sounds similar.
