Thread Starter | 6 String Banjo
I am going to get a 6 string banjo in the next week. My 5 string is just harder for me to play than a 6 string tuned in E. I also have a GoldTone 6 string mandolin, and a standard mandolin, in which case I use the 6 string alot more. I know all the standard mandolin and banjo chords, I just think my brain is geared towards the 6 stringers, from playing guitar all these years. My question is, there seems to be a multitude of 6-string banjo's. There like 20 different companies make them in the < $300 price range. Are there any standouts? It's pretty hard to find banjo reviews online. If anybody owns one and would like to make a recommendation, it would be much appreciated. A quick look on ebay shows that all these companies make one in the price range, Savannah, Hohner, Rogue, Dean, Trinity River, Galveston, Luna, Lucky Penny, Asheville, J. Reynolds, Indiana, Danville, Stagg, Santa Rosa, Countryman, Framus. To be honest, I know very little about any of these companies besides Hohner, Dean, Rogue, Stagg and Framus. I know they all make guitar stuff too. It seems like theres only two made that are out of my price point, the Gold Tone, and the Deeing, which costs much more. There's just so many too choose from and except for the Luna, they all look the same to me. Any advice?

I think they look the same because they're all made in the same factory and someone just slaps a different name on the headstock. Seriously, Korean QC being what it is, you're going to have to play them if you want a standout one (or step up and pay the bucks for the Deering or Gold Tone).
