Thread Starter | Any ideas on this Robin Trower tone?
Guys, Check this clip out, most notably the quick semi clean run he does at 0:27secs Now, I know the effects he uses, the fulltone Ods, the Deja vibe, fixed wah, clyde wah, soulbender mk2 etc, he uses Marshall VM amps here, and fulltone cables, his signature strat with nice custom 50s pickups. But this tone, the full, clear and really flutey neck pickup tone, i have never heard anything be able to do that so strongly with that huge bell like mids projection whilst remaining really clear and even - no matter what amp and pickups. Is there some other trickery at work here? Any help is much appreciated |

Can't help wrt his sound on that video, but you did remind me of something I read in a Trower interview way back in the 1970s. He said he gets his distortion from the typical overdriven Marshall tube head, but that then he prefers to reproduce that distortion through a clean speaker (sic) rather than through the typical Celestrion-loaded Marshall cabinet. So for a while back then he was using Marshall heads through Fender speaker cabinets. |
