77 Fender Strat

Would you trade a Line 6 pod pro xt w/fbv, a Focusrite Octore w/ADAT card and $1000 for a 77 Fender Strat?

So I'm looking to sell or trade some gear (listed above). I go into a local guitar shop (this place is a dump). Stuff everywhere. Any way he has a 77 Fender Strat in good condition (looks about like a reliced strat) for $2200.00.
It plays and sounds awesome. The cheapo strats he has don't even compare.

After talking to him he said he would be willing to put $700 in my stuff on trade. I'm thinking if I go in with $1000+my stuff cash I could get it.

What do you think?

Best Years for Strats - 70s and beyond

I'm not so sure now. I vaguely remember the truss rod sticking out.

No way. Paid $600 for a pretty pristine '79 ten years ago...and the way the economy is going, you'll eventually find one for under $1k

After thinking for a while and researching I'm gonna wait. I am considering ordering parts from Warmoth and building my own.
Still thinking.

I would not get to caught up in the this decade verses that decade stuff. It meant something when they were new, but they are now far from new. I say you need to evaluate old guitars on a case by case basis.

You'll have a better guitar.

I think he's playing you pretty hard on the value of your stuff. You should be able to sell that for closer to $1000? If you don't really need it, selling digital gear and buying guitars is usually a good idea, since guitars hold their value and gear doesn't. Next, building a guitar is great if you're going to own it forever, but it'll cost a lot more to build than to buy used. If I were looking for a strat, I'd ask myself a couple of questions...

1. Is the 79 magic? If it's 6.5#, resonant, plays like butta, has all the original stuff and you'll keep it for the rest of your life, it'll appreciate in value and no other $2200 guitar will. If it's not all that, walk away.

2. Are you starting a collection? If so, start frequenting dealers, head to Dallas or Arlington and find the guitar that IS all that.

3. IF you just want a player, and you're going to sell, get a Fender custom shop used. I love the sound and feel of the SRV, a used one in near perfect shape should be $1k or therabouts. If you want a thinner neck, the Clapton strats sell all day long in the $800 range.

4. If you want the perfect, customized guitar, and you'll never sell it, then build up a Warmouth guitar, or get one of the luthiers on here or The Gear Page to build you one. It'll cost as much or more than the Clapton, and sell for 1/2 what you pay, but it'll be exactly what you want.
