AMP SIM TEST - using free VST plugins

*new "mix" replaced old "mix"

LEFT channel + Poulin soloC full stack - great clean/crunch/dirty - my fave amp sim - smooth, punchy cab sound

RIGHT channel - (and centre at the beginning) =

AcmeBarGig Preampus knuckle head with voxengo boogex (just the cab sim) - nice clean/great "modern stack" crunch tones.

Solo: Poulin soloC full stack

Drums - Addictive Drums

----

Summary of what I tried:

No Class A 30 watt vibes here, but some of the crunch and cleans are nice.

Voxengo boogex - versatile amp/cab sims -

As cab sim, my preferred speaker models for chimey cleans/slight crunch - SM57, 441 center, SM57 on a 4 x 12 stack

Poulin LePou:

Poulin LE456 - great clean/crunch/dirty
Poulin soloC full stack - great clean/crunch/dirty
poulin hybrit head - similar to Super Lead and jcm800 - very versatile: nice jangly/smooth cleans and fat lo-mid crunch
Couldn't get the "full stack" version to work so used the head with Voxengo boogex

AcmeBarGig: - you have to use these "heads" with a cab sim

Preampus knucklehead + voxengo boogex (just the cab sim) - nice clean/great power amp crunch/dirty - superb switchable treble booster

preampus dickhead - didn't try

preampus meathead - didn't try

preampus gimme head - 60's stoner rock vibe... not really for cleans (OK sound)

preampus metal razor - at first I thought just full on "recto" gain but versatile with mellower cruch/breakup with all tone controls nearly off

also has a "drive amp" circuit which you can further shape the clean/breakup tones - nice surprise!

preampus Mr taterhead - ok for classic rock cleans/crunch but not my fave

Preamups Tamla - motown/funk cleans

preampus Brain + voxengo boogex (Sm57 model or 4 x 12) - slightly grainy texture - but convincing JTM45 vibe - good for layers

brain 2 - mellow clean - odd distortion - solid state vibe all-round. not what I expected

Wurr Audio greenmachine - versatile: great semi-clean and dirty - unfortunately it caused PT to crash when bouncing so I had to take it off

cool, thanks for posting this
did you use any pedals or was it straight through a di?

i've had pretty good luck with pedals and voxengo cabs but i've been meaning to try some more sims

Well being as I use Pro Tools LE - I suffered a combination of straight DI and the slightly delayed amp sim on the Aux channel.

Normally I would use a splitter >>> direct to DI and parallel >>> my sansamp TRi AC pedal for monitoring.

I have yet to check out the Poulin LECAB cab sim which looks a lil complex - but judging by the SoloC full stack the cab sim will be more satisfying than the stock IRs that come with Voxengo. But the Voxengo has loads of flavours which is cool.

I'm also checking out the AcmeBarGig Cab Enhancer which is supposed to go after any cab sim for further "reality goodness"

Thanks a lot! I just downloaded a bunch of these, and ended up using the AcmeBarGig Metal Series 60 preamp sim together with the boogex in a track.

Allright, the Metal Series 60 is on the main verse bright guitar, panned slightly to the right. There's also a doubled part, tucked in underneath, as well as a lower part, using Amplitube 2, panned to the left.

That sounds awesome... What were you using for a DAW and cab sim? And how did you capture the guitar? Did you use a preamp or just a DI box?

I tend to get a lot of hiss when I use amp modelers for some reason. What am I doing wrong?

Hello:

I'm a brand new subscriber, however, I've been reading lots of posts on here since a couple of months now. I got introduced to AcmeBarGig sims with my purchase of MixCraft 5. I also really appreciate the Poulin amp sims.

I really, really like the track example that you posted in this thread. Very good tone.

God Bless & Merry Christmas,
~C
